Vasily Popov (Soviet General)
Vasily Stepanovich Popov (russian: Василий Степанович Попов; January 8, 1894 – July 2, 1967) was a Soviet general and Hero of the Soviet Union. He fought for the Imperial Russian Army in World War I, attaining the rank of Praporshchik. He fought for the Bolsheviks in the subsequent civil war and in the war against Poland. He was made a Kombrig (brigade commander) on November 26, 1935. As commander of the 28th Rifle Corps, he took part in the Soviet-Finnish War in 1940 and was awarded the Red Banner Order. He was made a major general in June 1940 and a lieutenant general in June 1942. World War II When the German attack on the Soviet Union began on June 22, 1941, his 28th Rifle Corps was deployed to the 4th Army on the Western Front and was forced to withdraw from the Brest region towards Kobryn and Bobruisk. Bazyli Popowski vel Vasili Popov was born in the Polish noble family of the Pobóg coat of arms. The father of Bazyli Popowski was Szczepan Popowski, a state official in Kazan. Szczepan Popowski was born in the family estate of Popovo - Kuligóv ( pl, Popowo - Kuligowo), today Popowo-Parcele in Poland in Mazovia. The owner of the Popovo - Kuligov estate was Aleksander Popowski, father of Szczepan Popowski. In 1792 Popov advised Empress Catherine II of Russia on Polish affairs. The Ministry of Finance of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (russian: Министерство финансов РСФСР), known prior to 1946 as the People's Commissariat for Finance (russian: Народный комиссариат финансов), or shortened to Narkomfin, was part of the government of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic from 1918 until the fall of the USSR in 1991. It was subordinate to the Ministry of Finance of the USSR. History The Narkomfin commissar was part of Sovnarkom. Nikolai Krestinsky was the first commissar, appointed in 1918. However, following the introduction of the New Economic Policy, Narkomfin was made responsible for Gosbank, the State Bank of the RSFSR and then the Soviet Union.
