Strength athletics in the United States refers to the various strongman events throughout United States and North America in the sport of strength athletics in association with the World's Strongest Man ("WSM") contest. America has both an amateur and a professional sanctioning body. Mapleton, Utah
Mapleton is a city in Utah County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Provo–Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,365 at the 2020 census. History The area was first settled in 1850, and for a time was known as Union Bench. It started as an agricultural extension of Springville. Legal action between residents of Springville and what became Mapleton, largely over water rights, allowed Mapleton to chart its course beginning in 1901 when the community incorporated as a town. Jon Andersen-Reel, normally referred to simply as Jon Andersen (born January 8, 1972) is an American professional wrestler, bodybuilder, and former professional strongman competitor. Andersen has wrestled for Pro Wrestling Revolution based in California, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico and Japanese promotions Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). Steve MacDonald (born 1969) is a strongman competitor from Pittsburgh. Steve has competed in the IFSA organization as well as the Arnold Strongman Classic. Steve Kirit (born 1972) is an American professional strongman competitor. Steve is a 2-time winner of America's Strongest Man. Steve competed twice in the Arnold Strongman Classic, finishing 5th in 2003 and 9th in 2004. Steve competed in the World's Strongest Man in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Steve trained with fellow strongman competitor Steve MacDonald. Steve finished 7th in the first IFSA World Cup Championships in 2004. Travis Ortmayer
Travis Ortmayer (born August 9, 1981) is an American professional Strongman athlete from Cypress, Texas. He is nicknamed the Texas Stoneman due to his many world records in the Atlas Stone event. Ortmayer's strongman training complex is called "The Unit". His father, Roger Ortmayer, trains with him. He is supported by his mother, Sonja Ortmayer and his sister, Tara Ortmayer. Travis Ortmayer was born in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Strength Sports Ortmayer started out training in bodybuilding in his early teens and eventually decided to train and compete in powerlifting. Geoff Dolan (strongman)
Geoff Dolan (born April 17, 1974) is a Canadian strongman competitor. Strongman career Dolan has competed in both the World's Strongest Man and IFSA strongman organizations, reaching the finals of the World's Strongest Man in 2003 finishing 10th, and the 2005 IFSA finals finishing again finishing 10th. Dolan suffered a severe finger injury during the final event of the 2005 IFSA Strongman World Championships, the Atlas Stones. Dolan accidentally pinched his little finger under one of the stones when placing it in the pillar, leaving the bone exposed and nearly severing the finger completely off. This resulted in him dropping several places and finishing in 10th place. In the 19th century, the term strongman referred to an exhibitor of strength or similar circus performers who performed feats of strength. More recently, strength athletics, also known as strongman competitions, have grown in popularity. These competitions are now composed of a variety of events in which competitors have to move the highest weights possible, the winner being the one having the highest tally across all events. Description In the first half of the 20th century, strongmen would perform various feats of strength such as the bent press (not to be confused with the bench press, which did not exist at the time), supporting large amounts of weight held overhead at arm's length, steel bending, chain breaking, etc. They needed to have large amounts of wrist, hand, and tendon strength for these feats, as well as prodigious oblique strength. Powerlifting
Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. As in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it involves the athlete attempting a maximal weight single-lift effort of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Powerlifting evolved from a sport known as "odd lifts", which followed the same three-attempt format but used a wider variety of events, akin to strongman competition. Eventually odd lifts became standardized to the current three. In competition, lifts may be performed equipped or un-equipped (typically referred to as 'classic' or 'raw' lifting in the IPF specifically).
