William Van Alen
William Van Alen (August 10, 1883 – May 24, 1954) was an American architect, best known as the architect in charge of designing New York City's Chrysler Building (1928–30). Life William Van Alen was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1883 to James Van Alen and Ina C. Van Alen (' Harder) both from Dutch descent. He attended Pratt Institute while working for the architect Clarence True. He also studied for three years at the Atelier Masqueray, the first independent architectural atelier in the United States, founded by Franco-American architect Emmanuel Louis Masqueray. After finishing his studies, Van Alen worked for firms in New York, notably working on the Hotel Astor in 1902 for Clinton & Russell, before he was awarded the Paris Prize scholarship in 1908. The scholarship led to his studying in Paris, in the atelier of Victor Laloux at the École des Beaux-Arts. John Evert Van Alen House
John Evert Van Alen House is a historic home located at Defreestville in Rensselaer County, New York. The house was built between 1793 and 1794 and is a two-story, five-bay wide, room and a half deep, frame dwelling with a two-story, three-bay wide addition in the Federal style. The addition dates to about 1840–1854. It is sheathed in clapboards and is topped by a gable roof. Also on the property is a contributing L-shaped barn and the Van Alen family burial ground. The original owner John Evert Van Alen served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1793 to 1799. Luykas Van Alen House
The Luykas Van Alen House is an historic Dutch Colonial farmhouse at 2589 New York State Route 9H in the town of Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York. Built about 1737 and enlarged about 1750, it is one of the finest surviving examples of Dutch colonial architecture in upstate New York. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967. It is now an historic house museum operated by the Columbia County Historical Society, and open for tours on weekends from June to October. Description and history The Van Alen House is located in a rural setting of the upper Hudson River valley, on the west side New York 9H, about south of its junction with US 9. Van Alen Institute is a New York City-based independent nonprofit architectural organization, dedicated to improving design in the public realm. It was founded in 1894 as the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects. In 1995, the institute was named in honor of William Van Alen, architect of the Chrysler Building and recipient of the institute's 1908-1909 Paris Prize. Van Alen Institute has supported architects, urban thinkers, designers, and scholars through design competitions, fellowships, awards and public programs. Also, it has fostered dialogue about architecture as a creative practice. The Van Alen Building is a modern apartment and penthouse block on the seafront in Brighton, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. It was named after William Van Alen, the architect of New York City's Chrysler Building and is designed as a 21st-century interpretation of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles. It was completed in 2001. History Residential development along the north side of Marine Parade, a wide road leading eastwards along Brighton seafront across the top of East Cliff, began in about 1790 at the west end (nearest the old fishing village of Brighthelmston—the ancient heart of the city). Margaret "Daisy" Van Alen Bruguière (''née'' Post; July 15, 1876 – January 20, 1969) was an American socialite, art collector and the niece of Frederick Vanderbilt. From the 1940s until her death, she was the leader of the social scene in Newport, Rhode Island. Early life On July 15, 1876, she was born as Margaret Louise Post in Newport, Rhode Island, to William Post (1848–1900) and Rosalie DeWolf Anthony (1844–1929), a descendant of the early settlers of Rhode Island. James Henry Van Alen
James Henry Van Alen (August 17, 1819 – July 22, 1886) was a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Early life James Henry Van Alen was born in 1819, in Kinderhook, New York. He was the only son of James I. Van Alen (1788–1874), an affluent merchant, and Lucy ( née Trumbull) Van Alen (1788–1867) of the Connecticut Trumbulls. His sister Sophie Van Alen (d. 1916) was married to Robert Minturn Grinnell (1829–1898), the son of merchant Henry Grinnell. His education was through private tutors and he never devoted himself to business besides managing his wealth. He owned considerable real estate, which he left to his son upon his death in 1886. John Trumbull Van Alen (d. August 27, 1857) was an American merchant and diplomat who served as the American Chargé d'affaires to Ecuador from June 5, 1849 to August 1850. Biography Colonel Van Alen, a native of New York who worked as a merchant, was appointed by President Zachary Taylor to succeed fellow New Yorker, Van Brugh Livingston, as the Chargé d'Affaires to Ecuador in Quito, in a recess appointment, on June 5, 1849. Van Alen had helped Taylor get elected to the presidency and "enjoyed a greater degree of the old veteran's confidence and affection than almost any other person not of his immediate kindred." John Evert Van Alen (1749February 27, 1807) was an American surveyor, merchant, and politician from the U.S. state of New York. He served as a Federalist member of the United States House of Representatives. Early life Van Alen was born in Kinderhook in the Province of New York, the son of Adam and Mary Van Alen. After completing his studies he became a farmer. He moved to Defreestville and continued to farm, also serving in local offices including justice of the peace. He also became involved in civil engineering and surveying. During the American Revolution he served as a private in the 7th Regiment (Abraham Van Alstyne's) of the Albany County Militia.
