Luykas Van Alen House
The Luykas Van Alen House is an historic Dutch Colonial farmhouse at 2589 New York State Route 9H in the town of Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York. Built about 1737 and enlarged about 1750, it is one of the finest surviving examples of Dutch colonial architecture in upstate New York. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967. It is now an historic house museum operated by the Columbia County Historical Society, and open for tours on weekends from June to October. Description and history The Van Alen House is located in a rural setting of the upper Hudson River valley, on the west side New York 9H, about south of its junction with US 9. It is a -story brick structure, with a steeply pitched gabled roof. It has three chimneys, one at each gable end, and one between two of the three rooms that make up the ground floor. New York State Route 9H
New York State Route 9H (NY 9H) is a state highway located within Columbia County, New York, in the United States. It runs in a north–south direction for from an intersection with U.S. Route 9 (US 9), NY 82, and NY 23 in Bell Pond to a junction with US 9 in Valatie. Most of the route is an easterly alternate route of US 9; however, the two routes cross near Valatie, and the northernmost mile of NY 9H runs west of US 9. NY 9H was assigned in the early 1930s to the part of its modern alignment south of Valatie. It was extended to its current length around the end of the 1930s. Heritage Documentation Programs (HDP) is a division of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) responsible for administering the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). Michael Middleton Dwyer
Michael Dwyer is an American architect, considered to be an advocate of classical architecture, and known for designing new buildings in traditional vocabularies. He was the editor of ''Great Houses of the Hudson River'' (2001), and the author of ''Carolands'' (2006). Education and career Michael Dwyer graduated from Columbia College and received a master's degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He was associated from 1981 to 1996 with the architecture firm Buttrick White & Burtis, where he helped design the Saint Thomas Choir School, a fifteen-story boarding school in Midtown Manhattan, completed in 1987.
