History Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the Coeur d'Alene people knew the Valleyford area for its bountiful camas harvests. European settlement began in the second half of the 1800s when the Mullan Road began bringing settlers into the Inland Northwest. The road split into two branches at Cataldo Mission in present day Idaho, with one branch taking a northern route around Lake Coeur d'Alene and the other taking a southern route. The Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad Company (S.&I.E.R.R.Co.) was an electrified interurban railway operating in Spokane, Washington and vicinity, extending into northern and central Idaho. Freeman, Washington
Freeman is an unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington, United States. It is notable as being the location of the public elementary, middle and high schools serving a large area of rural southeast Spokane County. History Washington Brick and Lime, headquartered a few miles to the north in Mica, had a plant in Freeman in the late 1800s. Around the turn of the century, a number of businesses opened in Freeman. None remain in business today, but the site of the C.P. Thomas Mercantile and Post Office is now the location of Freeman Market, a small market and restaurant located at the turnoff from State Route 27. Freeman named for Freeman W. Mica is an unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington, United States. Mica is located along State Route 27 southeast of downtown Spokane. Mica had a post office with ZIP code 99023. History A post office called Mica was established in 1887, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1975. The community was named for deposits of mica. Mica's economy has been dominated by brick making since the town's early days. The current factory is owned by Mutual Materials and located on the site of American Fire Brick, founded by Mica pioneers the late 1800s. The American Firebrick Company campus was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The oldest grave in Mica Cemetery dates to 1883. State Route 27 (SR 27) is a state highway serving Whitman and Spokane counties, located in the eastern region of the U.S. state of Washington.
