Valentine, Kansas City
Valentine is a historic neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri. It is just north of the Westport entertainment district, bounded by Broadway on the east, Southwest Trafficway on the west, 31st Street on the north, and 40th Street on the south. Most of the houses in Valentine were built in the early 1900s and include such styles as Shirtwaist, Arts and Crafts, Colonial Revival, Georgian Revival, and bungalow. The Valentine Neighborhood Association was formed in 1971. The first president was Joe Cigas, for whom a street is named. Kansas City (abbreviated KC or KCMO) is the largest city in Missouri by population and area. Westport is a historic neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Originally an independent town, it was annexed by Kansas City in 1897. It is one of Kansas City's main entertainment districts. Westport has a lending library, a branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The Late 19th and 20th Century Revival style building was designed by Leon Grant Middaugh and J.A. Rose, and was built in 1909. It is significant for its architecture, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. It was demolished in 2020. The Historic Kansas City Foundation listed the apartments on their 2014 Most Endangered list of buildings in the Kansas City area. A fire in May 2020 created further damage to the vacant buildings. The Uptown Theater is a Historic building, historic theater located in Kansas City, Missouri. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as the Uptown Building and Theater. History The original design for the Uptown was carried out by Kansas City architect Robert Gornall. Construction first began on the portion of the Uptown that would house offices and shops along Broadway. This office and retail portion of the Uptown was completed in November 1926. Gornall's plans also called for a theater to extend along the rear portion of the building, with a tower at the north end to serve as an entrance and foyer. Penn Valley Redevelopment Project
The Penn Valley Redevelopment Project was a 1971 plan to demolish homes in Kansas City’s Valentine Neighborhood and to replace them with a multimillion-dollar office and residential complex. The Plan The project plan used Missouri’s Chapter 353 Urban Redevelopment Corporations Law. The law allows “the right to acquire by the exercise of the power of eminent domain any real property in the redevelopment area” (Section 353.130) and the property “shall not be subject to assessment or payment of general ad valorem (property) taxes imposed by the cities affected by this law, or by the state or any political subdivision thereof, for a period not in excess of ten years” (Section 353.110). The case was presented to the Kansas City City Plan Commission on April 1, 1971 and was unanimously defeated despite approval by the city staff.
