Valeisha Butterfield Jones is the co-president of The Recording Academy. Early life and education Butterfield Jones is the daughter of U.S. Congressman G. K. Butterfield and North Carolina State Legislator Jean Farmer-Butterfield. She graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 2000. Career In 2009 she was deputy director of public affairs at the Department of Commerce during the first part of the Obama administration. Between 2011 and 2012 she was part of the Obama for America campaign, as national youth vote director. In 2016 she worked at Google as global head of women and black community engagement. She organized Decoding Race, an international event for Google employees. In 2020 she was appointed chief diversity and inclusion officer of The Recording Academy, and in June 2021 became co-president of the company. The Recording Academy (formally the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; abbreviated NARAS) is an American learned academy of musicians, producers, recording engineers, and other musical professionals. Jean Farmer-Butterfield (born October 21, 1947) is an American politician who served as a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives for the 24th district from January 2003 to July 2020. Early life and education Farmer-Butterfield was born in Wilson, North Carolina. She earned a Bachelor and Master of Arts from North Carolina Central University. Career Farmer-Butterfield has worked as a consultant and manager of non-profits in the health and human services field for many years. Farmer-Butterfield was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2002 and assumed office in 2003. During her tenure, she served as a House majority whip from 2007 to 2011.
