Val Schier
Valerie Jean Schier was the mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, Queensland, Australia from March 2008 until May 2012. Schier was born on 22 April 1950 and grew up in Falmouth, a small village on the north east coast of Tasmania. She moved to Cairns in 1982 and bought a house at Machans Beach in 1984. On 15 March 2008, Schier was elected Mayor of the newly amalgamated Cairns Regional Council, a position she maintained until her defeat in May 2012 by Bob Manning. Personal life Schier has one son, James Louis Wilson, who married Kim Le Cras on 9 January 2009. Falmouth, Tasmania
Falmouth is a locality and small rural community in the local government area of Break O'Day, in the North-east region of Tasmania. It is located about north-east of the town of St Marys. The Tasman Sea forms most of its eastern boundary, with the remainder being the centre line of Henderson Lagoon. The 2016 census determined a population of 102 for the state suburb of Falmouth. This is a list of mayors of the Far North Queensland city of Cairns. Cairns was originally established as a Borough with a Chairman from 1885 until 1903, when the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'' transformed it into a Town with a Mayor. The Town achieved City status in 1923. In 1995, when the Shire of Mulgrave (Queensland), Shire of Mulgrave amalgamated into the City, the Mayor was elected by a much larger base of voters. Cairns Region
The Cairns Region is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Queensland, Australia, centred on the regional city of Cairns. Kevin Byrne (mayor)
Kevin Michael Byrne (born 1949) was Mayor of the City of Cairns in Queensland, Australia, from 1992 to 1995, and then from 2000 to 2008. Early life He was born in Lae, Papua New Guinea 1949. His family had first arrived in Papua New Guinea in 1906 when his grandfather was appointed Chief Collector of Customs in Port Moresby. His primary education was on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea and he attended Nudgee College, Brisbane from 1963 until 1967. Military career Byrne graduated in 1969 from Officer Cadet School, Portsea, Victoria (OCS Portsea) with an Australian Army commission. He was awarded the Sword of Honour for Leadership in that year. His 17-year military career included Australian and overseas postings to Malaysia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Rhodesia and South Vietnam. Robert Charles Manning (born 16 October 1945) is the Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, Queensland, Australia. Early life Manning was born in Cairns, and attended Edge Hill State School, and Cairns State High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from the University of Southern Queensland. Manning served three years in the Australian Army including service in the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971. Career Manning's first major position was as CEO of the Longreach Shire Council for eight years. In 1984 he returned to Cairns and became Secretary and then CEO of the Cairns Port Authority (including the Cairns Airport) for eighteen years from 1984 to 2002. Cairns (, ) is a city in Queensland, Australia, on the tropical north east coast of Far North Queensland. The population in June 2019 was 153,952, having grown on average 1.02% annually over the preceding five years. The city is the 5th-most-populous in Queensland, and 15th in Australia.
