Vadú
Vadú, nickname of Osvaldo Furtado, (January 31, 1977 – January 12, 2010) was a Cape Verdean singer and musician. He defined himself as a real "Badiu" or ironically as a "civilized Black". He was a nephew of the brothers of Zezé and Zeca di Nha Reinalda, two great names of the Santiago Island musical scene, Vadú studied in Cuba between 1990 and 1993 where he "drank" the Music of Cuba, current of Cuban music. He appeared in music in 2002 with his first album ''Ayan'' (English: yes, Portuguese: sim), in which he contributed three tracks, accompanied by members of the funaná sensational group Ferro Gaita, he later recorded two discs, ''Nha raiz'' (or ''Nha rais'', ''My roots'') in 2004 with the participation of renowned Cape Verdean musicians and ''Dixi Rubera'' in 2007 where he continued the path of popular rhythms and interior styles of Santiago including batuque (music and dance), batuque, tabanka and funaná along with Latin influences. Batuque (music And Dance)
The Batuque is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. As a music genre As a music genre, the ''batuque'' is characterized by having an ''andante'' tempo, a 6/8 or 3/4 measure and traditionally it is just melodic, i.e., it is just sung, it has no polyphonic accompaniment. When compared with the other musical genres from Cape Verde, the ''batuque'' has a call and response structure, and it is the only genre that is polyrhythmic. In fact, analyzing the rhythm, one finds out that it is a 3-beat rhythm over a 2-beat rhythm. In its traditional form, the ''batuque'' is organized as if it were an orchestral ''crescendo''. The ''funaná'' is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. ''Funaná'' is an accordion-based music. The rhythm is usually provided by the '' ferrinho'' much like the use of washboards in zydeco, the saw in Caribbean ripsaw music, the scraper in Sub-Saharan African music and the güiro in Latin and Pre-Columbian music. Festival De Baía Das Gatas
The Festival de Baía das Gatas or the Baía das Gatas Festival and the Baía das Gatas Music Festival takes place on a full moon weekend in August in Baía das Gatas, a village and a bay in the northeastern part of the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde.
