Ribeira Grande is a ''concelho'' (municipality) of Cape Verde. Situated in the northern part of the island of Santo Antão, it covers one fifth of the island area (166.5 km2), and is home to nearly half of its population (18,890 at the 2010 census). Its seat is the city Ponta do Sol. Manuel De Novas
Manuel d' Novas (February 24, 1938 — September 28, 2009) was a Cape Verdean poet and composer. Biography Manuel Jesus Lopes was born in Penha da França, one of the neighbourhoods of Ribeira Grande on the island of Santo Antão, he became one of the most important poets and composers of Cape Verde. His music is known all over the world, through performers like Cesária Évora, Bana and others. He lived in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. He visited 35 Rua de Moeda where other Cape Verdean musicians visited including Bana. He took part in the 2003 Baía das Gatas Music Festival. Manuel died on September 27, 2009, from a stroke he suffered for three years that started in Portugal, after staying at the hospital named Baptista de Sousa for about a week. José Luís Jesus (born September 20, 1950) is a former Cape Verdean politician. He was foreign minister of the country from 1998-1999. Biography He was born in Ribeira Grande, Cape Verde, Ribeira Grande, in the north of Santo Antão, Cape Verde, Santo Antão, one of the northernmost Cape Verdean communities. Roberto Duarte da Silva (25 February 1837, Ribeira Grande, Cape Verde - 8 February 1889, Paris) was a Cape Verdean chemist. Career Duarte Silva began at the age of 14 as an apprentice in a pharmacy. Later he came to Lisbon to work in the Farmácia Azevedo, and studied at the School of Pharmacy (Escola de Farmácia) of the University of Lisbon, there, he also received his alma mater.
