Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 56 (VR-56), nicknamed the Globemasters, is a transport squadron of the United States Navy Reserve providing world-wide airlift using C-40A Clipper aircraft and is based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. The squadron is under the operational control of Commander, Fleet Logistics Support Wing at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Texas. VR-56 is a reserve unit composed of both full-time active duty and traditional part-time Selected Reserve officers and sailors. The squadron previously flew the C-9B Skytrain II aircraft at Naval Station Norfolk/Chambers Field, Virginia before relocating to Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. VR-56 later retired its C-9B aircraft and is one of six VR squadrons that now flies and maintains three Boeing Next-Generation 737-700C aircraft designated as the C-40A Clipper. C-40 Clipper
The Boeing C-40 Clipper is a military version of the Boeing 737 Next Generation used to transport cargo and passengers. It is used by the United States Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. The Navy C-40A variant is named "Clipper", whereas the USAF C-40B/C variants are officially unnamed. Design and development The C-40 combines the Boeing 737-700 fuselage with the strengthened wings and landing gear of the larger and heavier 737-800. It also has auxiliary fuel tanks allowing an unrefueled range of up to compared with for the standard 737-700. McDonnell Douglas C-9
The McDonnell Douglas C-9 was a military version of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 airliner. It was produced as the C-9A Nightingale for the United States Air Force, and the C-9B Skytrain II for the United States Navy, U.S. Navy and United States Marine Corps, Marine Corps. The final flight of the C-9A Nightingale was in September 2005, and the C-9C was retired in September 2011. The U.S. Navy retired its last C-9B in July 2014. The Selected Reserve (also called SELRES, SR, or mistakenly Selective Reserve) are the members of a U.S. military Ready Reserve unit that are enrolled in the Ready Reserve program and the reserve unit that they are attached to. Selected Reserve members and units are considered to be in an active status.
