VIII Military Region (Spain)
The VIII Military Region, also known as the ''Captaincy General of Galicia'', was a military district of the Spanish Armed Forces from 1939 to 1984. It was focused upon territorial defence. It comprised the four Galician provinces: the Province of La Coruña, the Province of Lugo, the Province of Orense and Pontevedra. History The division of Spain into Captaincies General dates from 1705, when they were adjusted to the old kingdoms that constituted the Hispanic Monarchy. Military District
Military districts (also called military regions) are formations of a state's armed forces (often of the Army) which are responsible for a certain area of territory. They are often more responsible for administrative than operational matters, and in countries with conscript forces, often handle parts of the conscription cycle. Navies have also used a similar model, with organizations such as the United States Naval Districts. A number of navies in South America used naval districts at various points in time. Extremadura
Extremadura (; ext, Estremaúra; pt, Estremadura; Fala: ''Extremaúra'') is an autonomous community of Spain. Its capital city is Mérida, and its largest city is Badajoz.
