Uptown, Harrisburg
Uptown is a section of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania located North of the Midtown and Downtown neighborhoods. Bordered by the Susquehanna River to the West, Maclay Street to the South, North 7th Street to the East and Susquehanna Township to the North, the neighborhood is home to many ornate mansions along Front Street and Italian Lake, as well as moderately sized homes exemplifying character of early 20th-century architecture. After being devastated in 1972 by the flooding of Hurricane Agnes, the neighborhood slipped into a moderate decline. Since then, new homeowners have made improvements, causing property values to increase dramatically through the beginning of the 21st century. With the Susquehanna River's Riverfront Park and Capital Area Greenbelt within walking distance—as well as Italian Lake—Uptown Harrisburg is an example of relaxed urban living. Capital Area Greenbelt
The Capital Area Greenbelt is a looping trail located in the area of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This 20-mile loop around Pennsylvania's capital city provides visitors and tourists with opportunities to hike, ride bicycles, skate, jog, fish, walk their dogs, spot rare birds, learn about history, enjoy native flora and fauna, and appreciate nature. While parts of the trail are shared with roads, most of the loop is a dedicated path. The Trail, as it is commonly referred to by locals, passes along the Susquehanna River through Reservoir Park, Riverfront Park, Five Senses Garden, and Wildwood Park and Nature Center. Dauphin County Veteran's Memorial Obelisk
The Dauphin County Veteran's Memorial Obelisk, sometimes called the Harrisburg Obelisk, is an Egyptian-style obelisk that was erected in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as a tribute to Dauphin County’s Civil War soldiers. Designed by civil engineer E. Hudson Worrall, its planning, development and dedication phases were supervised by the Dauphin County Soldiers' Monument Association, which was formed by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly on January 30, 1867. It was planned and built in two installments between 1867 and 1876, enabling city leaders to raise the funds necessary for its construction. Camp Curtin
Camp Curtin was a major Union Army training camp in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, during the American Civil War. It was located north of Pennsylvania's state capitol building on 80 acres of what had previously been land used by the Dauphin County Agricultural Fairgrounds. Pennsylvania Governor's Residence
The Pennsylvania Governor's Residence is the official residence of the governor of Pennsylvania, in the Uptown neighborhood of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The neo-Georgian residence was built from 1966 to 1968 and designed by George M. Ewing, heading an architectural firm in Philadelphia. The mansion is currently only used for official functions and meetings, because Governor Tom Wolf commutes from his private residence in nearby Mount Wolf. The seven-bay brick front has a wide projecting pedimented central bay, in which a Palladian window perches on a pedimented doorway. The mansion is home to two Steinway grand pianos used for concerts and to entertain dinner guests. Every holiday season the house is opened for special tours. Polyclinic Medical Center, also known as Polyclinic Hospital, is a polyclinic in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and part of UPMC Pinnacle, a regional system of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) that serves South Central Pennsylvania. Riverfront Park (Harrisburg)
Riverfront Park is a public park in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania that spans beside the Susquehanna River. The park runs parallel to the Susquehanna River between the shoreline and Front Street, from Vaughn Street at the north to the I-83 John Harris Bridge at the south. It includes a concrete waterfront esplanade as well as greenspace on the riverbank first developed during the City Beautiful Movement in the early 20th Century by Warren H. Manning as one of the first riverfront reclamations by American cities. Riverfront Park overlooks views of the river, City Island, Wormleysburg and Blue Mountain in the distance.
