The University of Batna 1 (french: Université de Batna 1, also named Université Colonel Hadj Lakhdar, Arabic: جامعة باتنة) is a public university in the city of Batna, Algeria. The university was originally created in 1977 as the University of Batna, before being split in 2005 into the University of Batna 1 and the University of Batna 2. It has four faculties and over 19,000 students. Batna ( ar, باتنة, Latn, ar, Bātnah) is the main city and communes of Algeria, commune of Batna Province, Algeria. With a population of 290,645 (2008 census) it is the fifth largest city in Algeria. It is also one of the principal cities of the Chaoui area and is considered the capital of Aurès. History The first solid foundations (a military encampment) of the city were erected by a French garrison in 1844, with a strategic mission to create a permanently guarded access point for the main Sahara road. The University of Batna 2 (Mostefa Ben Boulaïd) (''Arabic'': جامعة باتنة 2 مصطفى بن بولعيد) is a non-profit Algerian public University located in Fesdis, Wilaya of Batna in Algeria. It was founded in 1977 as University of Batna and then restructured in July 2015 by presidential decree, which led to a split into two distinct universities, namely University of Batna 1 and University of Batna 2. On 4 February 2017, the university was named after the Algerian national Hero Mostefa Ben Boulaïd.
