United Nations Security Council resolution 1077, adopted on 22 October 1996, after reaffirming all resolutions United Nations Security Council Resolution 937, 937 (1994), United Nations Security Council Resolution 1036, 1036 (1996) and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1065, 1065 (1996) on Georgia (country), Georgia, the council established a Human Rights Office in Sukhumi, Georgia as part of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG). After reiterating its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, the security council considered a report by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Secretary-General and decided that the newly established Human Rights Office would be under the authority of the Head of Mission of UNOMIG. Sukhumi
Sukhumi (russian: Суху́м(и), ) or Sokhumi ( ka, სოხუმი, ), also known by its Abkhaz name Aqwa ( ab, Аҟәа, ''Aqwa''), is a city in a wide bay on the Black Sea's eastern coast. It is both the capital and largest city of the Republic of Abkhazia, which has controlled it since the Abkhazia war in 1992–93. However, internationally Abkhazia is considered part of Georgia. The city, which has an airport, is a port, major rail junction and a holiday resort because of its beaches, sanatoriums, mineral-water spas and semitropical climate. Abstention
Abstention is a term in election procedure for when a participant in a vote either does not go to vote (on election day) or, in parliamentary procedure, is present during the vote, but does not cast a ballot. Abstention must be contrasted with "blank vote", in which a voter casts a ballot willfully made invalid by marking it wrongly or by not marking anything at all. Abkhaz–Georgian Conflict
The Abkhaz–Georgian conflict involves ethnic conflict between Georgians and the Abkhaz people in Abkhazia, a ''de facto'' independent, partially recognized republic. In a broader sense, one can view the Georgian–Abkhaz conflict as part of a Geopolitics, geopolitical conflict in the Caucasus region, intensified at the end of the 20th century with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. United Nations Resolutions On Abkhazia
The Security Council of the United Nations passed 32 resolutions where it recognizes Abkhazia as an integral part of Georgia and supports its territorial integrity according to the principles of the international law. The UN is urging both sides to settle the Georgian–Abkhazian conflict through peaceful means by intensifying diplomatic dialogue and ratifying the final accord about the status of Abkhazia in the Georgian Constitution. Moreover, United nations calls for immediate return of all expelled ethnic Georgians (approximately 250,000) and determining the final status of Abkhazia as maximum autonomy or federative structure within the borders of the Georgian state. The resolutions also commend Russia's role as a peacekeeper and facilitator towards a resolution of the conflict. Peacekeeping
Peacekeeping comprises activities intended to create conditions that favour lasting peace.
