The United Arab Emirates Sevens team is new to the sevens scene. They previously formed the Arabian Gulf sevens team along with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia as part of the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union before the IRB disbanded the union. 2015 Asia Rugby Sevens Series
The 2015 Asian Sevens Series was the seventh Asian Sevens Series held by Asia Rugby. The winner and runner-up of the competition gaining entry into the World Series qualifying tournament (to become a core team in 2017) at the 2016 Hong Kong Sevens. The first leg of the 2015 Asian Sevens Series was held at the Tiantai Stadium in Qingdao on 5 and 6 September. The biggest surprise of that tournament was that for the first time since 2011 Hong Kong failed to make the finals, losing in the quarterfinals to the Chinese, 21–17. The Chinese were successful in the semi-finals defeating Sri Lanka 22–12 garnering their first cup final appearance against Japan, who defeated South Korea by 21–5 in their semi-final. Arabian Gulf Rugby Union Team (sevens)
The Arabian Gulf rugby sevens national team was a minor sevens side that represented the Gulf Cooperation Council member states. The team first played in 1990, competing at the Hong Kong Sevens tournament that year before travelling to the qualifying event for the Rugby World Cup Sevens held in Sicily. Over the next two decades the Arabian Gulf was a regular participant at the Hong Hong Sevens and in their home event, the Dubai Sevens. The Arabian Gulf team was dissolved at the end of 2010 to be replaced by single-country national teams. World Series and Rugby World Cup Sevens Arabian Gulf recorded their first win during the World Sevens Series in the inaugural season, defeating Singapore by 45–7 at the 2000 Hong Kong Sevens. Qatar

Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union
The Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union (AGRFU) was the governing body for rugby union that represented the Gulf Cooperation Council states until the end of 2010. As well as organising local and regional competitions in United Arab Emirates, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman, the AGRFU administered representative Arabian Gulf rugby union team, Arabian Gulf rugby teams and hosted the annual Dubai Sevens, Dubai round of the IRB Sevens World Series, Sevens World Series and 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai. 2011 Dubai Sevens
The 2011 Dubai Sevens was the 11th edition of the tournament and was part of the 2011–12 IRB Sevens World Series. It was held at Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the host stadium was The Sevens stadium. It was the official debut for the United Arab Emirates national team, the first of several national teams to have been created after the disbanding of the tournament's former host union, the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union. England defended their title by defeating France 29–12 in the final. Also, it included the first official IRB-sponsored women's sevens event outside of the Rugby World Cup Sevens.
