USS YAG-2
The ''USS YAG-2'' (ex-''Hoi Kong'', ex-''Robert O.'', later ''Yamashiro Maru'') was a miscellaneous auxiliary service craft of the United States Navy that served during World War II. History She was built in by the South China Shipbuilding and Repair Works Ltd. in Hong Kong and launched in 1931 as the ''Hoi Kong''. She was steel-hulled. In 1934, she was acquired by the North Negros Sugar Company in Manapla, Philippines and renamed ''Robert O.'' On 19 June 1941, the United States Navy purchased her from the North Negros Sugar Company and designated her as a Miscellaneous Auxiliary Service Craft (YAG). __NOTOC__ Length overall (LOA, o/a, o.a. or oa) is the maximum length of a vessel's hull measured parallel to the waterline. This length is important while docking the ship. It is the most commonly used way of expressing the size of a ship, and is also used for calculating the cost of a marina berth (for example, £2.50 per metre LOA). Battle Star
A service star is a miniature bronze or silver five-pointed star inch (4.8 mm) in diameter that is authorized to be worn by members of the eight uniformed services of the United States on medals and ribbons to denote an additional award or service period. The service star may also be referred to as a campaign star or battle star depending on which award the star is authorized for and the manner in which the device is used for the award. Service stars, campaign stars, and battle stars are worn with one point of the star pointing up on the suspension ribbon of a medal or service ribbon. A net laying ship, also known as a net layer, net tender, gate ship or boom defence vessel was a type of naval auxiliary ship. A net layer's primary function was to lay and maintain steel anti-torpedo or anti-submarine nets. Nets could be laid around an individual ship at anchor, or around harbors or other anchorages. Net laying was potentially dangerous work, and net laying seamen were experts at dealing with blocks, tackles, knots and splicing. As World War II progressed, net layers were pressed into a variety of additional roles including salvage, troop and cargo transport, buoy maintenance, and service as tugboats. Apart from Naval District Washington, the Districts were disestablished and renamed Navy Regions about 1999, and are now under Commander, Naval Installations Command (CNIC).
