USS Leyden (1865)
The first USS ''Leyden'' was a screw steamer that operated as a tug in the U.S. Navy from 1866 to 1903 and saw combat service in the Spanish–American War in 1898. History ''Leyden'' was launched in 1865 by James Tetlow, Chelsea, Massachusetts. From 1866 to 1879 she operated as a yard tug at the Boston Navy Yard, performing various harbor duties out of Boston, Massachusetts, until reassigned to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1879. Leyden served there until 1897, when she was assigned to Newport, Rhode Island. While the ship was near Boston on 26 August 1881, Seaman Michael Thornton jumped overboard and rescued a fellow sailor from drowning, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Loddie Stupka
Laddie Stupka (March 4, 1878 – February 20, 1946) was a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. Biography Stupka was born March 4, 1878, in Cleveland, Ohio and joined the Navy from Ohio. On January 21, 1903, the was returning from Puerto Rico when it foundered near Block Island in a heavy fog. For his actions during the wreck he received the Medal of Honor December 26, 1903. He died on February 20, 1946, and is buried in Baltimore National Cemetery Baltimore, Maryland. Cape San Juan Light
Cape San Juan Light (''Faro de Las Cabezas de San Juan'') is a historic lighthouse located on the northeastern part of the highest point of Cape San Juan in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The lighthouse was constructed in 1880 and was officially lit on May 2, 1882. The original illuminating apparatus, not changed until after 1898, had an range and displayed a fixed white light which every three minutes flashed red. The lighthouse owned by the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust is part of the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve. The reserve includes a bioluminescence bay, rare flora and fauna, various trails and boardwalks, and scientific research center. Despite its small size, the reserve shelters seven different ecological systems, including beaches, lagoons, dry forest, coral reefs and mangroves. The Battle of Fajardo was an engagement between the armed forces of the United States and Spain that occurred on the night of August 8–9, 1898 near the end of the Puerto Rican Campaign during the Spanish–American War. Background Proceeding under orders from Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, the monitors , , the armed tug , and the collier proceeded from Port Nipe to Cape San Juan, on the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico, arriving late afternoon on August, 1. The Battle of Nipe Bay on July 21, 1898, was an engagement of the Spanish–American War. The battle was fought in Nipe Bay, Cuba, by four United States Navy warships against the Spanish sloop-of-war ''Jorge Juan'' and three gunboats which were supported by forts guarding the harbor. Battle Nipe Bay had been designated as a rendezvous point for American naval forces delegated to attack Puerto Rico. Upon finding the harbor still occupied by Spanish forces, the American squadron, consisting of the gunboats USS ''Annapolis'' and USS ''Topeka'', the armed tug USS ''Leyden'' and the armed yacht , maneuvered through a minefield to engage the Spanish forces.
