URO VAMTAC
The URO VAMTAC () is a Spanish four-wheel drive military vehicle manufactured by UROVESA. Externally it is similar in appearance and design to the Humvee of the United States Military due to similar requirements. More than 2,000 of the vehicles have been delivered to the Spanish Armed Forces. Several other countries operate the VAMTAC as well, and it has seen service most recently in Afghanistan and Syria. The vehicle comes in three models, named I3, S3 and ST5, and has several configurations. Development The URO VAMTAC was developed by the Spanish company URO, Vehiculos Especiales S.A. so that it would meet the requirements of the Spanish military for a multipurpose, air-portable, high mobility off-road vehicle with good payload capacity. The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV; colloquial: Humvee) is a family of light, four-wheel drive, military trucks and utility vehicles produced by AM General. It has largely supplanted the roles previously performed by the original jeep, and others such as the Vietnam War-era M151 jeep, the M561 "Gama Goat", their M718A1 and M792 ambulance versions, the Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle, and other light trucks. Primarily used by the United States military, it is also used by numerous other countries and organizations and even in civilian adaptations. Uro (Both Galician and Spanish for "aurochs") is a Spanish brand of all-wheel-drive and military trucks, based in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. The Uro parent company, Urovesa, was started in 1981 by a group of ex- IPV employees. They quickly established themselves as a leading player in the 4x4 rural fire-fighting and construction Spanish truck markets. From 1984 on, they became certified provider of the Spanish Army, which currently operates more of two thousand of Uro vehicles, including the well-known URO VAMTAC (Vehículo de Alta Movilidad Táctico / High Mobility Tactical Vehicle), equipped with a 190 hp Steyr diesel engine, while most of the other Uro ranges feature Iveco engines. Investigación y Proyectos de Vehículos Especiales, S.A. (IPV) was a Spanish heavy vehicle manufacturer based in A Pontenova, Galicia. IPV's parent company, Mafsa, started in 1965 as a joint venture of three local automotive workshops. They had for some years re-conditioned ex-Spanish Civil War light 4x4 trucks, mostly of Italian OM manufacture, and fitted them with diesel engines. The first Mafsa product was a narrow-width truck, with a very elementary cab and either a Barreiros or Perkins engine, specifically designed for the northwestern Spain logging industry, and nicknamed ''carroceta''. As Mafsa had no sales network, the ''carrocetas'' were only sold from the plant. Nevertheless they were quite successful, and allowed Mafsa to expand into more general-purpose 4x4 trucks, which were specially in demand for fire-fighting and construction off-road applications.
