UCLA Bruins Men's Volleyball
The UCLA men's volleyball program began its first year in 1953. Al Scates had been the head coach each year since 1963 until his retirement after the 2012 season. John Speraw took over as head coach after Scates retirement, and has led the team since then. As a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation(MPSF), the Bruins play most of their home matches in Pauley Pavilion. When Pauley is not available, they play in the Wooden Center. Scates had more wins than any other NCAA Division I men's volleyball coach, with a record (since 1970, since no records were kept from 1953 to 1969) of 1,239–290. John Speraw
John Speraw (born October 18, 1971) is an American volleyball coach. He is the head coach of the men's volleyball team at United States national team and UCLA. He was the former coach of UC Irvine volleyball program where he led the team to three national titles in six years. Speraw graduated from UCLA in 1995 with a B.S. degree in micro-biology and molecular genetics. Player Speraw played on the UCLA Bruins men's volleyball team. He was a middle blocker and helped the Bruins win two NCAA National Championships. He was a member of the California Epsilon chapter of Phi Kappa Psi while at UCLA. Coaching As the UC Irvine head coach, he guided the Anteaters to three national titles in six years, the latest in 2012, defeating Southern California 3-0 (25-22, 34-32, 26-24). Ricci Luyties
Ricci Judson Luyties (born May 14, 1962 in Pacific Palisades, California) is a former American volleyball player. He played on the UCLA men's volleyball team and was also a member of the United States men's national volleyball team who received a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Luyties later became a successful professional beach volleyball player and won 7 domestic titles. He is now the head women's volleyball coach at the University of California, San Diego. High school career Luyties attended Palisades High School from 1976 through 1980. He was the Los Angeles’ Player of the Year. Luyties led his team to the city finals in 1979 and 1980, placing second to Westchester High School. Garrett Muagututia
Garrett Muagututia (born February 26, 1988) is an American professional volleyball player. He played and studied for 4 years at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a member of the US national team. Muagututia participated at the 2014 World Championship held in Poland. At the professional club level, he plays for the Indonesian team, Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi. Stein Metzger
Stein Metzger (born November 17, 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a male beach volleyball player from the United States. He played college men's indoor volleyball at UCLA where he won 3 NCAA National championships under legendary coach Al Scates. Metzger competed in the AVP. In 2006 he played with his high school teammate, Mike Lambert, and they advanced to the Final Four in fourteen of the fifteen team events, winning five times. They formed the only team to not have a losing record against any other team that season. Metzger made his Olympic beach volleyball debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he and partner Dax Holdren finished fifth, after having won the silver medal the previous year at the 2003 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Kevin Wong
Kevin Kahn Wong (born September 12, 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a retired professional beach volleyball player. He currently lives in Hawaii and runs a volleyball training program for youth. Personal life Wong graduated from the Punahou School. He then attended UCLA and received his degree in economics in 1995. Wong was named to People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" issue in 2000. He was honored by the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California in "Celebrating Chinese Americans in Sports", May 2009. He served as a beach volleyball analyst for NBC Sports at the Summer Olympics of 2012 and 2016 and continues to work on all of NBC's coverage. Mark Williams (volleyball)
Mark Williams (born 27 March 1979) is an Australian-born American volleyball and beach volleyball player. Williams was born in Sydney but moved to the United States when he was nine years old. In 1999, while he was at UCLA, Williams trained with the Australian national indoor team. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, was a libero of the squad which placed eighth among 12 participating teams. In 1998 he made his debut in beach volleyball with Larry Witt where they competed in Hermosa Beach. After graduating in 2001, he played in five AVP events that year with several partners. Erik Thomas Sullivan (born August 9, 1972) is an American former volleyball player and two-time Olympian. He played for the United States national volleyball team at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics. Rudy Suwara
Rudolph "Rudy" Suwara (born November 19, 1941) is an American former volleyball player who competed with the United States men's national volleyball team in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico. Suwara won a gold medal with the national team at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. Kent Steffes
Kent Steffes (born June 23, 1968 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) is a former professional beach volleyball player. Steffes received his AAA beach rating while still attending Palisades High School. He was named the 1986 National High School Player of the Year and was the nation's most highly recruited high school senior. In 1987 with partner Forrest Smith he won the World Championships in San Diego. He enrolled at Stanford University and played for one season before transferring to UCLA where he graduated with a degree in Economics. While a Bruin he joined the AVP Tour full-time in 1988. Sinjin Smith
Christopher St. John "Sinjin" Smith (born May 7, 1957, in Santa Monica, California) is a professional beach volleyball player. He won one U.S. championship and two World championships with Randy Stoklos. He began to compete as a professional in the two man beach volleyball tournaments of Southern California at age fifteen. He went to college at UCLA, where he played setter and outside hitter in head coach Al Scates' 6-2 system. The UCLA Bruins won the national championship in Smith's freshman year. Jeff Nygaard
Jeff Wayne Nygaard (born August 3, 1972, in Madison, Wisconsin) is an American volleyball and beach volleyball player who participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics with partner Dain Blanton in Athens, Greece. In 1996 and 2000 he was a member of the Men's Olympic National Indoor Team. He is a middle blocker. He attended La Follette High School in Madison, Wisconsin, where he played volleyball under coach Randy Ramig.
