Utah Grand Slam
The Utah Grand Slam is an annual competition held throughout the state of Utah in which participants run a series of four marathons throughout the calendar year. The man and woman with the lowest net time for all four races is declared the winner. There are additional prizes for winners within each age group. The series consists of five marathons: four primary races and one alternate if a runner cannot participate in a primary race. The Utah Grand Slam has been administered and managed by the Wasatch Running Center in Sandy, Utah since 2004. Utah ( , ) is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. The distance is also included in the World Athletics Championships, which began in 1983. Utah Valley Marathon
The Utah Valley Marathon (UVM) is an annual marathon foot-race in Northern Utah held on the first Saturday of June. The marathon course is USA Track & Field (USATF) certified and is a Boston Marathon qualifier. History The race was started in 2008 by Hyrum Oaks and Jeremiah West. The inaugural marathon was held on April 12, 2008. Between 2009 and 2018, the race was moved to the second Saturday in June. Beginning in 2019, the race will be held on the first Saturday in June to avoid conflicts with local festivals. In 2008, there were 120 marathon runners. In 2009, the number of marathon runners had grown to 748. Since 2009, the marathon has been part of the Utah Grand Slam. The race is put on largely by volunteers. CharityVision (formerly Deseret International), Mentor's International, Mac's Gift (formerly the Children with Cancer Christmas Foundation), and Road to Success are the four primary charities.
