Uruguay National Rugby Sevens Team
The Uruguay national rugby sevens team participates at the World Rugby and Sudamérica Rugby tournaments for rugby sevens national teams. Uruguay won the Sudamérica Rugby Sevens in 2012, and was runner-up six times. The team was fourth at both the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games. Uruguay played six rounds of the inaugural 1999–2000 World Sevens Series, scoring series points at the 2000 Punta del Este Sevens and 2000 Fiji Sevens. They participated in the 2014 Hong Kong Sevens World Series Qualifier, reaching the quarterfinals after finishing second in their pool, but lost to Russia 21-14. At the 2015 Hong Kong Sevens World Series Qualifier, they claimed wins over Brazil and Mexico and losses to Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea. The team did not qualify to the 2016 Hong Kong Sevens. 2020 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series – Men's Tour
The 2020 Challenger Series for men's rugby sevens teams was the inaugural season of the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, second-tier circuit with promotion to the first-tier World Rugby Sevens Series. The men's tour had sixteen national teams competing and included two Challenger Series events, played in Chile and Uruguay. A final 8-team knockout event had been planned as part of the Hong Kong Sevens tournament to decide the overall winner, but this was postponed and eventually cancelled by World Rugby due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Japan, as the top-placed team on the standings after the two completed events, was awarded the Challenger Series title and promoted to the World Rugby Sevens Series as a core team for the 2020–21 season. The 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens was the eighth edition of the Rugby World Cup Sevens organised by World Rugby. The 2022 tournament, comprising 24 men's and 16 women's teams as previously, was played over three days in one venue in September. It took place at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa between 9 and 11 September 2022. It was the first ever Rugby World Cup Sevens in Africa. The dates were chosen to take into account in the Commonwealth Games tournament which took place in July the same year. The men's tournament in the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens was held at AT&T Park in San Francisco. New Zealand won the tournament and took home the Melrose Cup by defeating England 33–12 in the final; South Africa won the bronze by defeating Fiji 24–19. The tournament was dominated by the World Series core teams, which accounted for all eight of the teams that reached the quarterfinals. The 1997 Rugby World Cup Sevens was the second edition of the Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament and the first to be held in Hong Kong. It was the last major sporting event to be held in the then British dependency before the transfer of sovereignty to China which took place just three months later. The 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens was held at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, Scotland, in April 1993. This tournament was the inaugural Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament. The International Rugby Board invited the established rugby union nations but also were keen to involve emerging nations in the event, recognising the fact that Sevens was providing the bridge between the developed rugby nations and those whose rugby union traditions were less well established. Rugby sevens at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru was held from July 26th to 28th. The venue for the competition is the rugby sevens stadium located at the Villa María del Triunfo cluster. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams (each consisting up to 12 athletes) competed in each tournament. This means a total of 192 athletes were scheduled to compete.
