Uppsala Student Union
Uppsala Student Union (''Uppsala studentkår'') is one of four students' unions at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden. According to Swedish law, university students are no longer required to be members of a students' union since 2010. Uppsala Student Union covers the Disciplinary Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University with the exception of students seated at the University's Gotland campus. Uppsala Student Union was founded in March 1849 by the student nations at the university and was the first Swedish students' union. The students' union appoints student representatives to various boards and committees of the university. Uppsala Student Union is a member of the Swedish National Union of Students. A students' union, also known by many other names, is a student organization present in many colleges, universities, and high schools. In higher education, the students' union is often accorded its own building on the campus, dedicated to social, organizational activities, representation, and academic support of the membership. Uppsala University ( sv, Uppsala universitet) is a public university, public research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the List of universities in Sweden, oldest university in Sweden and the Nordic countries still in operation. Nations At Swedish Universities
The student nations or ''nationer'' at the two ancient universities in Uppsala and Lund, of which there are now thirteen at each university, are the oldest student societies in Sweden. The Uppsala nations have a history stretching back to around 1630–1640. The nations in Lund were formed at the time of the foundation of the university (1666) or shortly thereafter. Traditionally, students were required to be members of the nation corresponding to the area from which they came. With one exception, Södermanland-Nerikes nation at Uppsala, this requirement is now voided, and students may even join more than one nation. International students are also free to choose whichever nation they desire. Swedish National Union Of Students
The Swedish National Union of Students ( sv, Sveriges Förenade Studentkårer, SFS), is an umbrella organisation of students' unions at higher education facilities in Sweden. The organisation was founded in 1921. It has around 47 affiliated students' unions, gathering around 270,000 students (2012). The large number of organised students can in part be explained by the fact that membership in the official local students' union was mandatory for students at universities and university colleges in Sweden until 2010. The requirement has a long history back to the precursor to Swedish students' unions, the students' nations where membership became mandatory in 1667. Education in Sweden is mandatory for children between ages 5/6 and 15/16 depending on when on the year they were born. The school year in Sweden runs from mid–late August to early/mid–June. The Christmas holiday from mid–December to early January divides the Swedish school year into two terms. Preschool is free for all families. Pharmaceutical Students Association, Uppsala
The Pharmaceutical Student Union (in Swedish ''Farmacevtiska Studentkåren'', nicknamed "Farmis" and "FaS") is one of six students' unions at Uppsala University. The Pharmaceutical Students Association represent all students at the Faculty of Pharmacy. The Association was founded in 1896 at what was then the Institute of Pharmacy in Stockholm. When the institute was moved and became part of the University of Uppsala in the 1960s, the students were allowed to retain their own student union.
