Upper Suriname River
The Upper Suriname River is the upper reach of the Suriname River. Shortly behind the beginning to the Lower Suriname River, there is the Brokopondo Reservoir. From there, the access by road ends at the jetty of Atjoni, near Pokigron. The Suriname River begins at the confluence of the Gran Rio and Pikin Rio near the village of Goddo with the Tapawatrasula rapids. Pokigron
Pokigron is a town in Suriname located on Brokopondo Reservoir. It is located in the Boven Suriname municipality (resort) in the Sipaliwini District. It has a population of approximately 400 people in 2018. Pokigron is located at the end of a paved road via Brownsweg to the Afobakaweg. Pokigron is often referred to as Atjoni which is the nearby quay, and literally the end of the road. Villages to the South of Pokigron have to be accessed by boat. The village is home to Maroons of the Saramaka tribe. Nearby towns and villages include Wittiehede Ston (19.6 nm), Mofina (15.6 nm), Wittikamba (1.4 nm), Malrosee-Kondre (5.1 nm) and Abenaston (3.0 nm). Saramacca River
Saramacca River is a river in Suriname. The Arawaks named this river "Surama", and today's name "Saramacca" is probably derived from it. Cayana Airstrip
Cayana Airstrip is an airstrip serving the villages around Kajana in the Sipaliwini District of Suriname. The runway is just west of Kajana, across the Suriname River. Medische Zending Primary Health Care Suriname, commonly known as Medische Zending (Dutch for "medical mission") or MZ is a Surinamese charitable organization offering primary healthcare to remote villages in the interior of Suriname. History The history of Medische Zending began on 3 October 1740 with J. Franz Reynier. Reynier, a medical doctor and missionary, and his wife came to Suriname on behalf of the Moravian Church. The purpose was not just to be a missionary, but also to provide medical health care including operations. Kajana, Suriname
Kajana (also spelled Cajana and Kayana) is a village in Sipaliwini District, Suriname. It lies on the Gaan-lio (Gran Rio), which together with the Pikin Lio (Little Rio) forms the Suriname River. The population call themselves Kadosi-nengre after Cardoso who was the owner of the plantation they ran away from. The village is home to Maroon (people), Maroons of the Saramaka tribe. The town has a population of about 200 people. The town has a first-aid medical center, a radio station called Radio Thijs, a primary school, and a locally owned kindergarten. Djumu Airstrip , ''(locally called Djoemoe Airstrip)'' is an airstrip serving Djumu, Suriname. Botopasi Airstrip , is an airstrip serving Botopasi, Suriname. History of the airstrip The Botopasi Airstrip was constructed by the Surinamese Medical Missionary Service, the " Surinaamse Medische Zendings Vliegdienst", also called the “Medische Zending Suriname” and was frequently visited by the Mission Aviation Fellowship. It was the first airstrip at the Upper Surinam River and was destined to facilitate transport to Paramaribo from the clinics Pokigron, Ladoani, Debikè and Dyumu. The first landing took place on 14 January 1963 by the American pilot Ted Lepper in his Piper Cub N 5406H.
