Unión De Escritores Y Artistas De Cuba
The National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba, UNEAC) is a social, cultural and professional organization of writers, musicians, actors, painters, sculptors, and artist of different genres. It was founded on August 22, 1961, by the Cuban poet, Nicolas Guillen. Initially their objective was uniting the intellectuals within the young Cuban Revolution to maintain a genuine Cuban culture. The group issued ''La Gaceta de Cuba'' beginning in 1962. Cuban violinist and professor Evelio Tieles was President of the Music Section from 1977 to 1984. Manuel Vázquez Portal was expelled from UNEAC because of his dissident views. Cuban Revolution
The Cuban Revolution ( es, Revolución Cubana) was carried out after the 1952 Cuban coup d'état which placed Fulgencio Batista as head of state and the failed mass strike in opposition that followed. After failing to contest Batista in court, Fidel Castro organized an armed attack on the Cuban military's Moncada Barracks. The rebels were arrested and while in prison formed the 26th of July Movement. After gaining amnesty the M-26-7 rebels organized an expedition from Mexico on the Granma yacht to invade Cuba. In the following years the M-26-7 rebel army would slowly defeat the Cuban army in the countryside, while its urban wing would engage in sabotage and rebel army recruitment. Evelio Tieles
Evelio Tieles Ferrer (born August 8, 1941, Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban violinist and professor that has organized and promoted the instruction of bowed strings instruments in Cuba. Academic background Evelio Tieles began to study music in Cuba with his father, Evelio Tieles Soler, when he was just seven years old, and continued at a later time with professor Joaquín Molina. Between 1952 and 1954, Tieles studied violin in Paris, France, with Jacques Thibaud and René Benedetti. In 1955 he returned to Paris and studied at the National Superior Music Conservatory in that city. In 1958, he continued his musical training at Conservatorio Tchaikovsky in Moscú, where he was a disciple of violinists David Oistrakh and Igor Oistrakh. Manuel Vázquez Portal
Manuel Vázquez Portal (born 1951 in Morón, Cuba, Morón, Ciego de Ávila province, Cuba) is a Cuban poet, writer and journalist known for his 2003 imprisonment. Background Vázquez Portal received a degree in philology from Villa Clara University. Prior to his imprisonment, he worked a variety of jobs, including teaching high school, reporting for state-owned media, and advising at the Ministry of Culture. During his tenure with government media, Vázquez Portal received three official prizes, but in 1995, he was expelled by the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) for expressing dissident opinions. In the same year, he co-founded the independent Cuba Press. He founded another independent news agency, Grupo de Trabajo Decoro, in 1998, working there for the following five years. Ediciones El Puente (The Bridge Publications) was a literary project for young writers in Cuba just after the 1959 revolution. Between 1961 and 1965 they published each other's work, introduced dozens of new voices - among them poet and translator Nancy Morejón, playwright Gerardo Fulleda León, playwright-activist Ana Maria Simo and folklorist Miguel Barnet - and held readings and performances. Nevertheless, El Puente is remembered primarily as one of the casualties of the wave of social repression in Cuba in the 1960s and 1970s. Roger Sebastián Aguilar Labrada (born 1947 in Pilón, Granma, Cuba) is a Cuban artist specializing in graphic design, painting, drawing and engraving. Aguilar studied in 1965 at the ''Escuela Nacional para Instructores de Artes Plásticas'' in Havana and the following year he became part of the seminary the ''Taller Experimental de Gráfica'' (TEG) in Havana, Cuba. Between 1977 and 1981, Aguilar was director of this institution and the Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC).
