Almenara, is a municipality in the northeast of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Situated on the Jequitinhonha River it is the largest city in that river valley. Its 2020 population was estimated at 42,143 and the municipal area was 2,301 km². It was founded on 13 January 1938. In 1981 the city was made the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Almenara. Lagoa da Prata is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. In 2020, its population was estimated to be 52,711. The city belongs to the mesoregion of Central Mineira and to the microregion of Bom Despacho. Early history In the 18th century, when Tiradentes was dismembered, the municipality of Itapecerica was created, consisting of 34 districts (or divisions) called ordinanças do Reino. Among them, there was a part called Pântano (where the municipality of Lagoa da Prata is located today), the 12th located. Another was Santo Antônio do Monte. The occupation of the place where the city is today began with a dam, built by a Portuguese named Novato, who wanted mills and monjolos.
