University Of Colombo Library
University of Colombo library is a centrally administered network of libraries in University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is home to one of the largest and oldest collections in Sri Lanka, with its roots dating back to 1870 with the establishment of the library of the Ceylon Medical College. History In 1870 the medial library of the Ceylon Medical College was established at its premises. After the establishment of the Ceylon University College in 1921 a new library was founded for the university college supporting its two departments of Arts and Science. It began in a room of College House with a collection of books belonging to Arunachalam Padmanabha, donated by his father Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam. The first volume of the 11th edition of Encyclopædia Britannica was given the accession number 1. Old Royal College Building, Colombo
Old Royal College Building is the main building of the University of Colombo. The iconic symbol of the University of Colombo, it is located on campus center in front of the university sports grounds, and presently houses the Department of Mathematics. Originally built in 1911 for the Royal College Colombo before it was transferred to the University College Colombo a year after its formation in 1921. Located behind the building is the King George Hall, Colombo, King George Hall. Marcus Fernando
Sir Hilarion Marcus Fernando, FRCP (21 October 1864 – 18 December 1936) was a pre-independence Ceylonese statesman, physician and banker. He was a member of both the executive council and legislative council as well as the chairman of the State Mortgage Bank of Ceylon. Education Fernando was educated at St Benedicts Academy (later known as St Benedict's College Colombo) and the Colombo Academy (which was subsequently renamed Royal College Colombo). At the Colombo Academy he won the Turnour Prize, Junior Cambridge Scholarship and the Mathematical Prize. He received a Ceylon Government Scholarship and Scholarship from thGilchrist Educational Trust enabling him to study medicine at University College London. He graduated with a BSc winning the Atchinson Scholarship and University of London Gold Medals in Physiology, Medicine, Forensic Medicine and Obstetrics.
