Unity and Renewal ( ca, Unitat i Renovació, UiR) was a local political party in Canillo, Andorra. History Although political parties were not legalised until 1993, the party contested the Andorran parliamentary election, 1992, 1992 elections in the Canillo parish, winning three of the four seats. Canillo
Canillo () is one of the parishes of Andorra. Canillo is also the name of the main town of the parish. The parish is considered the religious center of Andorra with the Sanctuary and Chapel of Our Lady of Meritxell, patron saint of Andorra, and contains one of the best-preserved romanesque churches in the Pyrenees, Sant Joan de Caselles. It has a population of 4,826, as of 2011. Despite having a tourist vocation, the parish of Canillo still retains many livestock and agricultural traits. Geography The localities of Canillo parish include Soldeu, Bordes d'Envalira, El Tarter, Sant Pere, Ransol, Els Plans, El Vilar, l'Armiana, l'Aldosa, El Forn, Incles, Prats, Meritxell and Molleres. Electoral system All 28 seats of the General Council were up for election. Each parish formed a constituency, electing four members each. As political parties were not legalised until 1993, all candidates ran as independents, although press and newspapers considered some candidates to be government endorsed (supporting Ribas government) or opponents. The General Council ( ca, Consell General d'Andorra, ) is the unicameral parliament of Andorra. It is sometimes referred to as the General Council of the Valleys (Catalan: ''Consell General de les Valls'') because it was the historical name and to distinguish it from similarly named bodies in the Val d'Aran and in France. Marc Forné i Molné (; born 30 December 1946) was the prime minister of Andorra from 7 December 1994 to 20 February 2005. After 2 full terms, he was succeeded by Albert Pintat after Pintat won the January 2005 election. He is a lawyer by profession, and was president of the Liberal Party of Andorra (''Partit Liberal d'Andorra''). Biography Marc Forné was born on 30 December 1946 in La Massana, the son of Antoni Forné i Jou, an Arfa-born lawyer and activist of the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification, and Joana Molné i Armengou, also born in La Massana. He studied at the University of Barcelona where he graduated in law in 1974. Between 1969 and 1972, he worked as a civil servant in the Department of Public Services of the General Council of the Valls d'Andorra and from 1974, he worked as a criminal lawyer, sharing an office with his father and brother.
