United States Tennis Association
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for tennis in the United States. A not-for-profit organization with more than 700,000 members, it invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grass-roots to the professional levels. The association was created to standardize rules and regulations and to promote and develop the growth of tennis in the United States. The USTA runs the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center which hosts the US Open every year. The USTA has leagues in most places for adults skill levels between beginner and pro. The USTA also hosts tournaments across the country every weekend for club players or professionals. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. Robert Shaw Oliver (September 13, 1847 – March 15, 1935) was an American soldier and businessman. Early life Oliver was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 13, 1847. He was a son of Daniel Augustus Oliver and Elizabeth Willard (née Shaw) Oliver (1823–1850), who died three years after his birth. His maternal grandparents were Robert Gould Shaw and Eliza Willard (née Parkman) Shaw. Through his abolitionist uncle Francis George Shaw and, his wife, Sarah Blake Sturgis Shaw, he was a first cousin of Josephine Shaw Lowell (wife of Charles Russell Lowell) and Robert Gould Shaw (who was killed at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner during the Civil War). Julian Myrick
Julian Southall Myrick (March 1, 1880 – January 4, 1969) was an insurance salesman and promoter of tennis from the United States. Myrick was born in Murfreesboro, North Carolina on March 1, 1880. In 1898, Myrick entered the insurance business as an application clerk at the Mutual Insurance Company. In 1906, Myrick partnered with his colleague Charles Ives to start their own company, Ives and Myrick. Myrick is known for his contributions to insurance industry. In 1910, he was involved in founding the first training college for insurance agents. Myrick also helped set up American College of Life Underwriters (now known as The American College of Financial Services, The American College) in 1927. George Adee
George Townsend Adee (January 4, 1874 – July 31, 1948) was an American football player and tennis official. Biography Born in Stonington, Connecticut, Adee attended Yale University, where he was the quarterback of the school's football team. In 1894, he was selected as one of eleven players named to the 1894 College Football All-America Team. He served in the U.S. Army in the Spanish–American War and World War I. Adee was also a competitive tennis player who appeared six times US Championships singles between 1903 and 1909. In 1964, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame for his contributions as an administrator. He served as the president of the United States Tennis Association from 1916 to 1919, and was also a member of the Davis Cup and Amateur Rules Committees. Robert Wrenn
Robert Duffield Wrenn (September 20, 1873 – November 12, 1925) was an American left-handed tennis player, four-time U.S. singles championship winner, and one of the first inductees in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Biography Wrenn was born in Highland Park, Illinois. Wrenn attended Harvard University, where he was a prominent quarterback on the football team. Wrenn was considered "one of Harvard's greatest all-around athletes," a star player at football, ice hockey, and baseball. Wrenn played a small role in the formation of collegiate ice hockey in the United States. In the fall of 1892, Wrenn and fellow tennis champion (and doubles partner) Malcolm Greene Chace played in an international tennis tournament in Niagara Falls, New York. James Dwight
James Dwight (July 14, 1852, France – July 13, 1917) was an American tennis player who was known as the "Founding Father of American Tennis". Biography Dwight won the first recorded tournament in the U.S. (and probably in the world, before the first Wimbledon Championships) played in August 1876 on the property of his uncle, William Appleton, at Nahant, Massachusetts. After graduating from Harvard in 1874, he traveled in Europe, saw the new sport of lawn tennis being played, and brought the necessary equipment home. Then he persuaded his uncle to mark out a court on his smooth front lawn so he could play a game with his cousin Fred Sears. That first attempt was disappointing. Dwight later wrote "we voted the whole thing a fraud and put it away." About a month later, they tried again as a way of passing time on a rainy day. Henry Slocum (tennis Player)
Henry Warner Slocum, Jr. (May 28, 1862 – January 22, 1949) was an American male tennis player who was active in the late 19th century. Biography He was born on May 28, 1862 in Syracuse, New York to Henry Warner Slocum. Slocum graduated from Yale University in 1883 and started playing tennis in 1884 although he entered few prominent tournaments until the spring of 1886. Slocum won the 1888 Men's Singles title at the U.S. National Championships' in Newport against defending champion and compatriot Howard Taylor in straight sets. The next year he successfully defended his title in the Challenge Round with a victory over Quincy Shaw. His other career highlights inlude winning the Wentworth Open Tournament at Wentworth, New Hampshire in 1887.
