The United States Attorney for the Northern District of California is the United States Attorney responsible for representing the federal government in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The Northern District of California encompasses 15 Northern California counties from Del Norte in the north to Monterey in the south. The District contains three major metropolitan areas in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose; an expanse of suburban and rural area; and more than 300 public companies centered on Silicon Valley. Nearly 9 million people live, work, and raise their families in the Northern District of California. In an effort to help protect these individuals, the United States Attorney’s Office prosecutes violations of federal law and represents the United States in civil litigation in the District. United States Attorney
United States attorneys are officials of the U.S. Department of Justice who serve as the chief federal law enforcement officers in each of the 94 U.S. federal judicial districts. Each U.S. attorney serves as the United States' chief federal criminal prosecutor in their judicial district and represents the U.S. federal government in civil litigation in federal and state court within their geographic jurisdiction. U.S. attorneys must be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, after which they serve four-year terms. Currently, there are 93 U.S. attorneys in 94 district offices located throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Alex G. Tse is a United States magistrate judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California and was formerly the acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of California from 2018 to 2019. Education and legal career Tse is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley. He went to law school at University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Prior to becoming acting US Attorney, Tse was a longtime federal prosecutor who worked in the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. Melinda L. Haag (born 1961) is a San Francisco-based litigator and former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California. Early life and education In 1983, Haag graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. John Anthony Mendez (born September 4, 1955) is a senior United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. Joseph P. Russoniello (born October 12, 1941) is an American attorney who served two terms as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California. George William Hunter (born November 5, 1942) is an American former executive director of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), the players' union of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
