United Nations Security Council Resolution 716
United Nations Security Council resolution 716, adopted unanimously on 11 October 1991, after noting a report of the Secretary-General, the Council recognised the progress made regarding the " Set of Ideas" in Cyprus and reaffirmed the efforts of the United Nations in solving the Cyprus dispute. The Council reaffirmed its position on Cyprus, most recently in its Resolution 649 (1990) regarding the establishment of an independent, non-aligned, bi-communal federation without a union with another country. It called upon the parties involved to fully adhere to the aforementioned principles, requesting their co-operation with the Secretary-General and noting his intention to resume negotiations in November 1991 to complete an overall framework agreement. The best way to do this, the Council felt, was to consider a high-level international meeting chaired by the Secretary-General in which the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, along with Greece and Turkey would participate. Cyprus Dispute
The Cyprus problem, also known as the Cyprus dispute, Cyprus issue, Cyprus question or Cyprus conflict, is an ongoing dispute between Greek Cypriots in the south and Turkish Cypriots in the north. Initially, with the Modern history of Cyprus#Interwar period, occupation of the island by the British Empire from the Ottoman Empire in 1878 and subsequent annexation in 1914, the "Cyprus dispute" was a conflict between the Turkish and Greek islanders. The international complications of the dispute stretch beyond the boundaries of the island of Cyprus itself and involve the guarantor powers under the Zürich and London Agreement#Treaty of Guarantee, Zürich and London Agreement (Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom), the United Nations, and the European Union, along with formerly the interference of Czechoslovakia and the Eastern Bloc. It entered its current phase in the aftermath of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Turkish military invasion and occupation of the Turkish Cyprus, ...

United Nations Security Council Resolution 649
United Nations Security Council resolution 649, adopted unanimously on 12 March 1990, after noting a report of the secretary-general on a recent meeting between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus and recalling Resolution 367 (1975), the council expressed its regret that, in the 25 years since the establishment of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, a solution to the situation has not been found. The council in particular reaffirmed meetings between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities in 1977 and 1979, in which they pledged to establish a bi-communal "Federal Republic of Cyprus". It urged both to pursue their efforts, along with the Secretary-General, to find a mutually acceptable solution for the establishment of a federation, calling on both to complete an overall agreement agreed to in 1989. Resolution 649 requested the Secretary-General to make suggestions to both leaders to solve the situation and report back on the progre ...

Non-Aligned Movement
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a forum of 120 countries that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. After the United Nations, it is the largest grouping of states worldwide. The movement originated in the aftermath of the Korean War, as an effort by some countries to counterbalance the rapid bi- polarization of the world during the Cold War, whereby two major powers formed blocs and embarked on a policy to pull the rest of the world into their orbits. One of these was the pro-Soviet, communist bloc whose best known alliance was the Warsaw Pact, and the other the pro-American capitalist group of countries many of which belonged to NATO. In 1961, drawing on the principles agreed at the Bandung Conference of 1955, the Non-Aligned Movement was formally established in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, through an initiative of Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Ghanaian President Kwame N ...

Referendum
A referendum (plural: referendums or less commonly referenda) is a direct vote by the electorate on a proposal, law, or political issue. This is in contrast to an issue being voted on by a representative. This may result in the adoption of a new policy or specific law, or the referendum may be only advisory. In some countries, it is synonymous with or commonly known by other names including plebiscite, votation, popular consultation, ballot question, ballot measure, or proposition. Some definitions of 'plebiscite' suggest it is a type of vote to change the constitution or government of a country. The word, 'referendum' is often a catchall, used for both legislative referrals and initiatives. Etymology 'Referendum' is the gerundive form of the Latin verb , literally "to carry back" (from the verb , "to bear, bring, carry" plus the inseparable prefix , here meaning "back"Marchant & Charles, Cassell's Latin Dictionary, 1928, p. 469.). The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarized zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that was established in 1964 and extended in 1974 after the ceasefire of 16 August 1974, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and the ''de facto'' partition of the island into the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus (excluding the British Sovereign Base Areas) and the largely unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. The zone, also known as the Green Line (, ''Prasini Grammi''; ), stretches for from Paralimni in the east to Kato Pyrgos in the west, where a separate section surrounds Kokkina.
