United Nations Security Council Resolution 414, adopted on 15 September 1977, after hearing from the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus, the Council expressed concern at recent developments in the country, particularly in the Famagusta area. It noted the urgency of progress on a peace settlement, reaffirming resolutions 365 (1974), 367 (1975) and General Assembly Resolution 2312 (1974). Famagusta
Famagusta ( , ; el, Αμμόχωστος, Ammóchostos, ; tr, Gazimağusa or ) is a city on the east coast of Cyprus. It is located east of Nicosia and possesses the deepest harbour of the island. During the Middle Ages (especially under the maritime republics of Genoa and Venice), Famagusta was the island's most important port city and a gateway to trade with the ports of the Levant, from where the Silk Road merchants carried their goods to Western Europe. United Nations Security Council Resolution 367
United Nations Security Council Resolution 367, adopted on 12 March 1975, after receiving a complaint from the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, the Council again called upon all States to respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus. The Council noted its regret over the unilateral declaration of the Turkish Federated State, though it did not wish to prejudge the final political settlement of the problem. The resolution then goes on to call for the urgent and effective implementation of General Assembly resolution 3212, to request the Secretary-General undertake a new mission to convene the parties and called upon them to co-operate. The Council finally called upon all parties concerned to refrain from any action which might jeopardize the negotiations and requested the Secretary-General to keep them informed on the implementation of the resolutions. Turkish Invasion Of Cyprus
The Turkish invasion of Cyprus began on 20 July 1974 and progressed in two phases over the following month. Taking place upon a background of intercommunal violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and in response to a Greek junta-sponsored Cypriot coup d'état five days earlier, it led to the Turkish capture and occupation of the northern part of the island. The coup was ordered by the military junta in Greece and staged by the Cypriot National Guard in conjunction with EOKA B. It deposed the Cypriot president Archbishop Makarios III and installed Nikos Sampson. The aim of the coup was the union (''enosis'') of Cyprus with Greece, and the Hellenic Republic of Cyprus to be declared.
