Unitech FC
Unitech FC, known in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League as Tukoko University Lae FC, is a semi-professional association football club based in Lae, Papua New Guinea. The club was founded in around 1994. It is the football club on the campus of the Papua New Guinea University of Technology. The club was the second ever Papua New Guinea side to take part in an Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) event, having qualified for the 2001 Oceania Club Championship after winning the 2000 Papua New Guinea National Club Championship. The side also competed in three editions of the National Soccer League, and were champions of the Lahi Regional League on four occasions between 2001 and 2008. Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The KPHL National Soccer League, also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top division of professional soccer in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league formed in 2006 by Papua New Guinea Football Association. It replaced the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship as the country's major soccer competition. In its 13 seasons, the competition has been won by only two clubs: Hekari United won the first eight editions, while Lae City have won the last six. The two clubs have met in two Grand Finals, in 2015–16 and 2019, with Lae City winning both. Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, to the east of Papua New Guinea and north-west of Vanuatu. The 2011–12 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the sixth edition of Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by Hekari United, who defeated Eastern Stars in the Grand Final 3–0 to win their sixth consecutive title. The Golden Boot was won by Raymond Gunemba of Hekari, while Emmanuel Simon of Besta PNG United was the Player of the Season for the third straight year. Besta United PNG
Besta PNG United, sometimes known as Besta United PNG, is a semi-professional soccer club, based in Lae, Papua New Guinea. The side acts as the national development team of the Papua New Guinea Football Association, and is limited to players who are under the age of 23. The side made their debut in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League in the 2009–10 season, finishing bottom of the table. Since then, they have made gradual progress, with their best success coming in 2018, when they reached the Grand Final for the first time, losing 3–0 to Toti City Dwellers. The 2010–11 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the fifth edition of Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won for the fifth consecutive season by Hekari United, who defeated Eastern Stars in the Grand Final 4–0. Gelle Hills United was a semi-professional Papua New Guinea soccer club founded in 2006, based in Central Province but playing their home games predominantly in Port Moresby. The club was one of the founding members of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, finishing as runners-up in the opening two seasons of the competition. These remain their most successful seasons to date, having disappeared sometime after 2010. History Despite what their team logo suggests, Gelle Hills was founded in 2006 shortly before the inaugural Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season began. Hekari United, formerly known as POM Souths, Souths United, PRK Souths United and Hekari Souths United, is a professional football club formed in 2006, based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The club holds the record for most titles in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, having won eight consecutive titles from 2006 to 2014. They are also one of the two clubs from outside Australia and New Zealand to have won the OFC Champions League, and therefore to have represented Oceania at the FIFA Club World Cup, having achieved both in 2010. Finschhafen
Finschhafen is a town east of Lae on the Huon Peninsula in Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. The town is commonly misspelt as Finschafen or Finschaven. During World War II, the town was also referred to as Fitch Haven in the logs of some U.S. Navy men. History The area was charted by the British navigator Captain John Moresby in 1873–74. Finschhafen was surveyed in 1884 by the German scientist and explorer Otto Finsch who gave his name to the town. A town was built in 1885 as part of the colony of German New Guinea and was named after the discoverer (-hafen = -harbour). In 1886, Johann Flierl and two other Lutheran missionaries settled in the area, creating a Mission station at Simbang. A malaria epidemic in 1891 caused the town to be abandoned by the German plantation owners and government officials. It was resettled afterward and was claimed by the Germans in 1894. Papua New Guinea, a sovereign state in Oceania, is the most linguistically diverse country in the world. According to Ethnologue, there are 839 living languages spoken in the country.
