The Union Democratic Party ( my, ပြည်ထောင်စုဒီမိုကရေစီပါတီ, abbreviated UDP) is a Burmese political party founded in 2008. It was formally registered in May 2010, with headquarters in Bahan Township, Yangon. UDP is contesting the 2010 general election in Burma. UDP's chairman is Thein Htay, after Phyo Min Thein resigned, citing concerns over the election's fairness. The Union Democratic Party is a merger of the Public Democracy Party, founded by Phyo Min Thein, and the Union Democracy Alliance Organisation, founded by Shan political leader Shwe Ohn Shwe Ohn (1923-2010) was an ethnic Shan politician and co-founder of the Union Democratic Party, which contested the 2010 Burmese general election. Bahan Township
Bahan Township ( my, ဗဟန်း မြို့နယ်, ) is located in the north central part of Yangon. The township comprises 22 wards, and shares borders with Yankin Township and Mayangon Township in the north, Sanchaung Township and Kamayut Township in the west, Tamwe Township in the east, and Dagon Township and Mingala Taungnyunt Township in the south. Bahan is one of the most prosperous townships in Yangon. Shwetaunggya (formerly, Golden Valley), Sayarsan Road and Inya Myaing are three of Yangon's most exclusive neighborhoods. Population Bahan Township has 96,732 residents with 51,214 being female residents and 45,518 being male residents as of 2014 March. Phyo Min Thein ( my, ဖြိုးမင်းသိန်း; born 13 April 1969) is a Burmese politician and former political prisoner who is currently serving as Chief Minister of Yangon Region and Yangon Region Parliament MP for Hlegu Township Constituency No. 2. Prior to this, he was the chairman of Union Democratic Party and founder of People Democracy Party which was later merged with Union Democratic Party. Early life Phyo Min Thein was born on 13 April 1969 in Yangon. He was the youngest of four children born to Khin Tun and Khin Khin Aye. He studied at Yangon University but did not graduate. Student activist In 1988, Phyo Min Thein was a second year physics major student at Botahtaung campus of Yangon University when the 8888 Uprising began, and became the secretary of the Thanlyin Township All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABSFU). Shwe Ohn
Shwe Ohn (1923-2010) was an ethnic Shan politician and co-founder of the Union Democratic Party, which contested the 2010 Burmese general election. He participated in the Panglong Conference and was an advocate for federalism in Burma. In his final years, he began working on an autobiography, in spite of being diagnosed with liver cancer. The book, entitled ''Union Traveler'', was published in May 2011. He died from complications of liver cancer at his home in Yangon's Sanchaung Township on 20 August 2010.
