Blairsville, Georgia
Blairsville is a city and the county seat of Union County, Georgia, Union County, on the northern border of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States. It was founded near the Nottely River, which was dammed in 1942 as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority project, forming Lake Nottely. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the city had a population of 616. History During the 1830s, the United States conducted Indian Removal of the Cherokee Nation (19th century), Cherokee Nation and other Southeast tribes, to what was designated as Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. This area along the Nottely River was part of the large Cherokee territory and the leader Goingsnake was born here in 1758. After American settlers moved into this area, in 1835 the Georgia General Assembly designated Blairsville as the Union County seat. Union County, Georgia
Union County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,632. The county seat is Blairsville. History Union County was originally a core part of the homeland of the native Cherokee tribe. Mountainous and formerly one of the most remote and inaccessible parts of Georgia, the area became the object of desire for white settlers with the discovery of gold in the 1820s. While the gold rush didn't last long, a land lottery system opened up the area for settlement in the 1830s and Union County was formed in 1832, carved from part of Cherokee County. The newcomers formed political groups to force the Cherokee off their land, part of the removal of most of the southeastern native tribes in what is known as the Trail of Tears. Suches, Georgia
Suches is an unincorporated community in Union County, Georgia, Union County, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States. The local school is Woody Gap School, the smallest public school in the state of Georgia. The historical marker in front of the school lists it as the homestead of Joseph E. Brown, governor of Georgia during the American Civil War, Civil War and devout believer in slavery. The community most likely is named after the local Suches family. It is the birthplace of Arthur Woody, a forest ranger who was a key figure in the early history of Chattahoochee National Forest. Suches is approximately one mile from the Appalachian Trail, Appalachian Trail (AT) as it passes through Woody Gap. Until recently, the annual Tour de Georgia bicycle race has gone through Suches on its way to Dahlonega, Georgia, Dahlonega.
