Unfoldable Cardinal
In mathematics, an unfoldable cardinal is a certain kind of large cardinal number. Formally, a cardinal number κ is λ-unfoldable if and only if for every transitive model ''M'' of cardinality κ of ZFC-minus-power set such that κ is in ''M'' and ''M'' contains all its sequences of length less than κ, there is a non-trivial elementary embedding ''j'' of ''M'' into a transitive model with the critical point of ''j'' being κ and ''j''(κ) ≥ λ. A cardinal is unfoldable if and only if it is an λ-unfoldable for all ordinals λ. A cardinal number κ is strongly λ-unfoldable if and only if for every transitive model ''M'' of cardinality κ of ZFC-minus-power set such that κ is in ''M'' and ''M'' contains all its sequences of length less than κ, there is a non-trivial elementary embedding ''j'' of ''M'' into a transitive model "N" with the critical point of ''j'' being κ, ''j''(κ) ≥ λ, and V(λ) is a subset of ''N''. Without loss of generality, we can demand also that ...

Unfold (higher-order Function)
In computer programming, an anamorphism is a function that generates a sequence by repeated application of the function to its previous result. You begin with some value A and apply a function f to it to get B. Then you apply f to B to get C, and so on until some terminating condition is reached. The anamorphism is the function that generates the list of A, B, C, etc. You can think of the anamorphism as unfolding the initial value into a sequence. The above layman's description can be stated more formally in category theory: the anamorphism of a coinductive type denotes the assignment of a coalgebra to its unique morphism to the final coalgebra of an endofunctor. These objects are used in functional programming as '' unfolds''. The categorical dual (aka opposite) of the anamorphism is the catamorphism. Anamorphisms in functional programming In functional programming, an anamorphism is a generalization of the concept of '' unfolds'' on coinductive lists. Formally, anamorphisms ...

Unfolded Protein Response
The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a cellular stress response related to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. It has been found to be conserved between all mammalian species, as well as yeast and worm organisms. The UPR is activated in response to an accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. In this scenario, the UPR has three aims: initially to restore normal function of the cell by halting protein translation, degrading misfolded proteins, and activating the signalling pathways that lead to increasing the production of molecular chaperones involved in protein folding. If these objectives are not achieved within a certain time span or the disruption is prolonged, the UPR aims towards apoptosis. Sustained overactivation of the UPR has been implicated in prion diseases as well as several other neurodegenerative diseases, and inhibiting the UPR could become a treatment for those diseases. Diseases amenable to UPR inhibition inc ...

Equilibrium Unfolding
In biochemistry, equilibrium unfolding is the process of unfolding a protein or RNA molecule by gradually changing its environment, such as by changing the temperature or pressure, pH, adding chemical denaturants, or applying force as with an atomic force microscope tip. If the equilibrium was maintained at all steps, the process theoretically should be reversible during equilibrium folding. Equilibrium unfolding can be used to determine the thermodynamic stability of the protein or RNA structure, i.e. free energy difference between the folded and unfolded states. Theoretical background In its simplest form, equilibrium unfolding assumes that the molecule may belong to only two thermodynamic states, the ''folded state'' (typically denoted ''N'' for "native" state) and the unfolded state (typically denoted ''U''). This "all-or-none" model of protein folding was first proposed by Tim Anson in 1945, but is believed to hold only for small, single structural domains of protei ...

Unfolded State
In biochemistry, denaturation is a process in which proteins or nucleic acids lose the quaternary structure, tertiary structure, and secondary structure which is present in their native state, by application of some external stress or compound such as a strong acid or base, a concentrated inorganic salt, an organic solvent (e.g., alcohol or chloroform), agitation and radiation or heat. If proteins in a living cell are denatured, this results in disruption of cell activity and possibly cell death. Protein denaturation is also a consequence of cell death. Denatured proteins can exhibit a wide range of characteristics, from conformational change and loss of solubility to aggregation due to the exposure of hydrophobic groups. The loss of solubility as a result of denaturation is called ''coagulation''. Denatured proteins lose their 3D structure and therefore cannot function. Protein folding is key to whether a globular or membrane protein can do its job correctly; it must be fol ...

Maximum Variance Unfolding
Maximum Variance Unfolding (MVU), also known as Semidefinite Embedding (SDE), is an algorithm in computer science that uses semidefinite programming to perform non-linear dimensionality reduction of high-dimensional vectorial input data. It is motivated by the observation that kernel Principal Component Analysis (kPCA) does not reduce the data dimensionality, as it leverages the Kernel trick to non-linearly map the original data into an inner-product space. Algorithm MVU creates a mapping from the high dimensional input vectors to some low dimensional Euclidean vector space in the following steps: # A neighbourhood graph is created. Each input is connected with its k-nearest input vectors (according to Euclidean distance metric) and all k-nearest neighbors are connected with each other. If the data is sampled well enough, the resulting graph is a discrete approximation of the underlying manifold. # The neighbourhood graph is "unfolded" with the help of semidefinite programming. ...

Unfold (The Necks Album)
''Unfold'' is an album by Australian improvised music trio The Necks first released on the Ideologic Organ label in 2017 as a double LP and download. Reception Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, awarded the album a score of 79, based on 8 reviews which is considered as "Generally favourable". Pitchfork's Grayson Haver Currin called the album "the result of a band that’s always tested supposedly solid borders—between jazz and rock, between acoustic and electric, between composition and improvisation" and noted "For this double LP, the Necks devote each of four sides to one improvisation. With runtimes between 15 and 22 minutes, they’ve chopped the typical Necks tune into thirds or quarters. What’s more, there’s no intended sequence for these sides, meaning you could start with the hectic, gamelan-like rumble of “Timepiece” or end there, a move that makes the entire experience feel like a ceaseless fever dream ...

Unfold (Porter Robinson Song)
"Unfold" is a song by American record producer Porter Robinson and British singer-songwriter and producer Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. It is the sixth and final single from Robinson's second album ''Nurture'', released on April 22, 2021, one day before the rest of the album. This song is the only listed collaboration on ''Nurture'' and Robinson has stated that this was a contributing factor in making the song a callback to his first album '' Worlds''. Background and composition Being a longtime admirer of Higginbottom's music, Robinson decided to collaborate with him for a song on ''Nurture''. During the writing process, Higginbottom expressed his appreciation for "Sea of Voices", a song from Robinson's previous album, '' Worlds''. This led Robinson to write the instrumentation in a similar style to his older music, while still retaining some distinctive elements of his newer works. Most prominently among the distinctive sounds of ''Nurture'' is Robinson's own singing voi ...
