Underwood (surname)
Underwood is a surname of English topographic origin. History Deriving from the Old English "under" a preposition meaning "under" or "below", plus "wuda", a wood. The name was originally given to one dwelling at the foot of a wood or literally "below the trees of a forest". The name may also be locational from three places named with these elements i.e., Underwood in Derbyshire, England, Underwood, Nottinghamshire, England. The surname is first recorded in the latter half of the 12th Century (see below). One William Underwude appears in the 1219 Assize Court Rolls of Yorkshire, and a William under the Wode in the 1332 Subsidy Rolls of Staffordshire. From the beginning of the surviving parish registers in 1559 there were Underwoods recorded in Pickering parish, North Yorkshire, England. Eric Underwood
Eric John Underwood AO, CBE (7 September 1905 – 19 August 1980) was an Australian scientist who pioneered research into sheep nutrition and wool production. Personal life Underwood was born in Harlington, Middlesex, England on 7 September 1905, the youngest of three children to James and Elizabeth Underwood. When Elizabeth died in 1907, Underwood and his siblings were placed in the care of family while James migrated to Western Australia and established himself at Mount Barker. After a long period of correspondence James convinced a friend Kate Taysom to accompany the children to Fremantle in 1913. James and Kate were married the day after their arrival. Kevin Ray Underwood
Kevin Ray Underwood (born December 19, 1979) is a convicted murderer from Purcell, Oklahoma. Crimes Authorities had sought a missing 10-year-old girl, Jamie Rose Bolin, for whom an Amber Alert had been issued. Underwood, who lived near Bolin in the same apartment complex, was arrested on April 17, 2006. Underwood admitted to FBI agents and Oklahoma detectives that he had murdered and attempted to decapitate Bolin, telling them, "Go ahead and arrest me. She is in there. I chopped her up." After Underwood's confession, Bolin's corpse, stashed in a large plastic container, was recovered from his bedroom closet. Purcell Police Chief David Tompkins stated that Bolin's murder was the culmination of Underwood's fantasy to "kidnap a person, rape them, torture them, kill them, cut off their head, drain the body of blood, rape the corpse, eat the corpse then dispose of the organs and bones." Joseph Edwin Underwood
Joseph Edwin Underwood (November 3, 1882 – June 1, 1960) was a civil engineer, land surveyor and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was mayor of Saskatoon in 1932. He was born in Huron County, Ontario, the son of Joseph Underwood and Mary Miller, and was educated in Huron County and at the University of Toronto. In 1911, he qualified as a Dominion Land Surveyor and, in 1912, as a Saskatchewan Land Surveyor. Underwood came to Saskatoon in 1911 and, in the same year, married Lina Case. He joined the firm of McArthur and Murphy, which then became known as McArthur, Murphy & Underwood and later as Underwood, McLellan & Associates Limited, A. A. Murphy having departed in 1920 to open an electrical supply company and later to co-found CFQC, a Saskatoon radio station. John Thomas Underwood (April 12, 1857, in London, England – July 2, 1937, in Osterville, Massachusetts) was an American entrepreneur and investor who founded the Underwood Typewriter Company. Biography He was the elder brother of missionary Horace Grant Underwood and helped finance Horace's missionary work. John and his two sisters, Hannah Underwood Stephens and Helen Underwood Conard, and his brothers, the Rev. Dr. Horace Grant Underwood and Frederick Wills Underwood, were all born in London. Sir James Cresseé Elphinstone Underwood FMedSci (born 11 April 1942) is a British pathologist who was awarded a knighthood for services to medicine in the 2005 New Year honours list. James Underwood (4 September 1771 – 10 February 1844) was a noted shipwright, merchant businessman and distiller in Australia. Born in Bermondsey, London, he was shipped to Australia as a convicted felon in 1790. He learned his trade in Sydney, becoming joint owner of a merchant ship, ''Diana'' in 1799. He co-founded Kable & Underwood, along with Henry Kable which was a merchant trading company, and utilised ''Diana'' for seal hunting in the Bass Strait. As his enterprise expanded, Underwood added coal and sandalwood shipping to his business interests, increased the size of his fleet, and added Simeon Lord as a business partner. Horace Grant Underwood
Horace Grant Underwood (19 July 1859 – 12 October 1916) was a Presbyterian missionary, educator, and translator who dedicated his life to developing Christianity in Korea. Early life Underwood was born in London and immigrated to the United States at age 12. He graduated from New York University in 1881 and New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1884. Work in Korea Underwood served as a Northern Presbyterian Church missionary in Korea, teaching physics and chemistry at Gwanghyewon (광혜원) in Seoul, the first modern hospital of Korea. Underwood arrived in Korea on the same boat as Henry G. Appenzeller on Easter Sunday (5 April) 1885, and he also worked with Henry Appenzeller, William B. Scranton, James Scarth Gale, and William D. Grant Revon Underwood is a historian of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and a professor at Brigham Young University (BYU). He is also the author of ''The Millennial World of Early Mormonism'' and the editor of ''Voyages of Faith: Explorations in Mormon Pacific History''.
