''Undercover'' is a 1983 Australian film directed by David Stevens. Michael Pare, Geneviève Picot, Peter Phelps, Barry Otto, Nicholas Eadie and Sandy Gore star in the film. Production It was based on an original idea by Miranda Downes, who wanted to make a film based on Australian underwear manufacturer Fred Burley. Stevens was attracted to the film because it gave him the chance to make a film that was fun and glamorous, which said something about Australia. Miranda Downes
Miranda Downes (27 February 1950 – 3 August 1985) was an Australian screenwriter. Ernest Arthur Knibb was convicted of her murder. Miranda (known as Mandy) attended Cumberland High School (Carlingford). She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New South Wales. Subsequently, she completed a course in "script writing" at the National Institute for Dramatic Arts (NIDA). She worked as a production secretary in the film industry when she wrote an original script, ''Undercover'' (1983). She later started working on a script called ''Cane'' about Italian cane cutters in Queensland, when she was murdered on a beach north of Cairns. Ernest Knibb was arrested after an investigation by the TV show ''60 Minutes''. Filmco
Filmco was an Australian investment company used by producers to raise funds to invest in Australian movies. It flourished during the 10BA era. The company was formed in 1980 by Peter Fox and Bob Sanders (who merged his Pact Productions into the company). They were joined by John Fitzgerald, a former lawyer at the South Australian Film Corporation, who acted as executive producer. David Stratton wrote that "the Filmco slate consisted of some of the most dismal films ever produced in Australia" and represented "a scandalous waste of money". Peter Fox was killed in a car accident in 1982. Bruce Smeaton (born 5 March 1938) is an Australian composer who is well known for a variety of Australian film and television scores in all genres, including features, shorts, television, documentaries and advertisements. David Elfick (born 20 December 1944) is an Australian film and television writer, director, producer and occasional actor. He is known for his association with writer-director Phillip Noyce, with whom he has collaborated on films including ''Newsfront'' (1978) and ''Rabbit-Proof Fence'' (2002). Career Elfick began his film career as the producer of the 1971 surf movie ''Morning of the Earth'', directed by Alby Falzon. David Stevens (22 December 1940 – 17 July 2018) was an Australian writer and director, best known for his work on ''Breaker Morant'', ''A Town Like Alice'', and ''The Sum of Us''. Biography Stevens was born in 1940, in Tiberias, Palestine where his father was an aircraft engineer working on flying boats. In 1960, he left to emigrate to Australia, however his ship was diverted to New Zealand where he remained, until moving to Australia in the early 1970s. Stevens co-wrote ''Breaker Morant'' with Bruce Beresford and Jonathan Hardy, earning an Oscar nomination. He wrote the play ''The Sum of Us'', which ran in New York for a year and won the Outer Critics Circle Award. He adapted it into a feature film, featuring Russell Crowe and Jack Thompson, which won an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Screenplay.
