Simpson Newland CMG (2 November 1835 – 27 June 1925), pastoralist, author and politician, was a pioneer in Australia who made significant contributions to development around the Murray River. He was also an author of practical works and novels. Early years Newland was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, a son of Rev. Ridgway William Newland (died 1864) and his wife Martha Newland, née Keeling (died 1870), who emigrated with their eight children to South Australia aboard the ''Sir Charles Forbes'', arriving in June 1839. He and his siblings were educated to a high standard at home by their mother. Simpson Newland was at first a sickly boy, but the open air life improved his health, and he became a competent stockrider and bushman. His evenings were largely given up to improving his education with the help of his mother. Alfred Allen Simpson
Alfred Allen Simpson (15 April 1875 – 27 November 1939) was an industrialist in South Australia and a partner in the firm A. Simpson & Son, founded by his grandfather Alfred Simpson. He was the mayor of Adelaide from 1913 to 1915. History Alfred Allen Simpson was a son of Alfred Muller Simpson (4 April 1843 – 28 September 1917) and his first wife Catherine Simpson, née Allen ( ? – 16 October 1887). Both Allen and his brother, Frederick Neighbour Simpson, learned the trade of tinsmith, much as their father and grandfather had done, except that they were not apprenticed; Allen learned the craft in the Gawler Place workshop and Fred in the stove factory in Pirie Street. George Debney
George Debney was an early settler of South Australia, a cabinetmaker whose shop became Gay's Arcade and part of Adelaide Arcade. History George Robert Debney (1818 – 15 May 1897) of Whitechapel, London, with his parents Robert and Margaretta Debney, née Rennie, and their small family emigrated to South Australia aboard ''Lloyds'', arriving in Adelaide in December 1838. He farmed at The Reedbeds, and after making a small fortune as one of the fortunate "Snobs" group of investors in the Burra copper mines, purchased a fine property in Burnside and land at 103–105 Rundle Street (Section 84? 85?), where he opened a furniture factory, which soon won valuable contracts, including seating for the new Legislative Council chambers in 1855. Alice Springs
Alice Springs ( aer, Mparntwe) is the third-largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Known as Stuart until 31 August 1933, the name Alice Springs was given by surveyor William Whitfield Mills after Alice, Lady Todd (''née'' Alice Gillam Bell), wife of the telegraph pioneer Sir Charles Todd. Known colloquially as 'The Alice' or simply 'Alice', the town is situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre. It is nearly equidistant from Adelaide and Darwin. Henry Simpson Newland
Sir Henry Simpson Newland, (24 November 1873 – 13 November 1969) was a distinguished Australian surgeon. As president of the Australian War Service League he was active in promoting selective conscription and martial law during the Second World War. The Henry Simpson Newland Prize is named in his honour. The medal was first awarded by the Federal Council of the British Medical Association in Australia, and since 1956, by the Australian Medical Association. He is commemorated by a plaque on the Jubilee 150 Walkway. A portrait of Newland by Ivor Hele won the 1953 Archibald Prize. Royal Geographical Society Of Australasia
On 22 June 1883, the Geographical Society of Australasia started at a meeting in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. A branch was formed in Victoria in the same year. In July 1885, both the Queensland and the South Australian branches started. In July 1886 the society became the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia. The New South Wales branch's new constitution in 1886 widened its scope to encourage interest in scientific, commercial, educational and historical aspects of geography. The Society sponsored several important expeditions, notably the New Guinea Exploration Expedition in 1885, whose members included zoologist Wilhelm Haacke, erstwhile director of the South Australian Museum. Joseph Cook
Sir Joseph Cook, (7 December 1860 – 30 July 1947) was an Australian politician who served as the sixth Prime Minister of Australia, in office from 1913 to 1914. He was the leader of the Liberal Party from 1913 to 1917, after earlier serving as the leader of the Anti-Socialist Party from 1908 to 1909. Cook was born in Silverdale, Staffordshire, England, and began working in the local coal mines at the age of nine. He emigrated to Australia in 1885, settling in Lithgow, New South Wales. He continued to work as a miner, becoming involved with the local labour movement as a union official. In 1891, Cook was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as a representative of the Labor Party, becoming one of its first members of parliament. Thomas Price (19 January 1852 – 31 May 1909), commonly referred to as Tom Price, served as the Australian Labor Party (South Australian Branch), South Australian United Labor Party's first Premier of South Australia.
