Henry Simpson Newland
Sir Henry Simpson Newland, (24 November 1873 – 13 November 1969) was a distinguished Australian surgeon. As president of the Australian War Service League he was active in promoting selective conscription and martial law during the Second World War. The Henry Simpson Newland Prize is named in his honour. The medal was first awarded by the Federal Council of the British Medical Association in Australia, and since 1956, by the Australian Medical Association. He is commemorated by a plaque on the Jubilee 150 Walkway. A portrait of Newland by Ivor Hele won the 1953 Archibald Prize. Kensington, South Australia
Kensington is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters council area. Unlike the rest of the city, Kensington's streets are laid out diagonally. Second Creek runs through and under part of the suburb, which contains many heritage buildings as well as Norwood Swimming Pool. History The village of Kensington was surveyed in November 1838 by J.H. Hughes, the first in the immediate area, and was named after Kensington Palace. First Anglican bishop Augustus Short first lived in Kensington after his arrival in December 1847, on the corner of Bishop's Place and Regent Street. The Colonial Secretary, then Alfred Mundy, lived in Kensington in 1848. This was before the village of Marryatville was developed over the road to the south. Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". Phil Newland
Philip Mesmer Newland (2 February 1875 – 11 August 1916) was an Australian sportsman who excelled at Australian rules football, cricket and lacrosse. He played Sheffield Shield cricket for South Australia as a wicket-keeper and toured England with the Australian Test team in 1905. Life and career Newland was a member of the noted Newland family of South Australia. His father was author Simpson Newland and he was the brother of surgeon Henry Simpson Newland and politician Victor Marra Newland. Phil Newland was educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide, and the University of Adelaide, where he studied law. He was called to the Bar in 1899. Newland made his first-class and Sheffield Shield debut in 1899/00 but had to wait over two years to make his second appearance. He took part in every Shield campaign from 1902/03 to 1905/06 and usually batted in the lower order.
