''Ultimate Success Today'' is the fifth studio album by American post-punk band Protomartyr (band), Protomartyr. Thematically inspired by lead singer Joe Casey (musician), Joe Casey's mid-life crisis in the wake of the band's No Passion All Technique, debut being reissued, the album - conceived as a "valediction" of the band's first decade together - was recorded in 2019 at Dreamland Recording Studios in Hurley, New York with the help of producer David Tolomei. The sessions saw the band playing and recording as a single unit, even to the extent of following similar daily routines. It also notably features collaborations with a number of guest musicians such as Jemeel Moondoc and Fred Lonberg-Holm. The lyrics, mostly written by Casey on the spot, have been described as dark and apocalyptic; while the music has been found to be subtler and more dynamic than the band's past releases. Protomartyr is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 2010. The band consists of Joe Casey (vocals), Greg Ahee (guitar), Alex Leonard (drums), and Scott Davidson (bass). In 2020, Kelley Deal joined the band in a touring capacity, providing additional keyboards, guitar and backing vocals. To date, the band has released five studio albums: ''No Passion All Technique'' (2012), '' Under Color of Official Right'' (2014), ''The Agent Intellect'' (2015), '' Relatives in Descent'' (2017) and ''Ultimate Success Today'' (2020). ''The Jewel in the Lotus'' is the debut album by jazz woodwind player Bennie Maupin, recorded and released in 1974. In 2011, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer used samples of ''The Jewel in the Lotus'' as the basis for the track "Rensenada" on the remix album '' Re:ECM''. The title is a translation of the Buddhist mantra Om mani padme hum. Reception The editors of AllMusic awarded the album a full five stars. Bennie Maupin
Bennie Maupin (born August 29, 1940) is an American jazz multireedist who performs on various saxophones, flute, and bass clarinet. Maupin was born in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He is known for his participation in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi sextet and Headhunters band, and for performing on Miles Davis's seminal fusion record, ''Bitches Brew''. Maupin has collaborated with Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Woody Shaw, Lee Morgan and many others. He is noted for having a harmonically-advanced, "out" improvisation style, while having a different sense of melodic direction than other "out" jazz musicians such as Eric Dolphy. Jazz Fusion
Jazz fusion (also known as fusion and progressive jazz) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and jazz improvisation, improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll. Jazz fusion arrangements vary in complexity. Some employ groove-based vamps fixed to a single key or a single chord with a simple, repeated melody. Others use elaborate chord progressions, unconventional time signatures, or melodies with counter-melodies. Half Waif is the stage name of American musician Nandi Rose. Early life Rose was born to an Indian mother from Uganda. She grew up in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Kelley Deal (born June 10, 1961) is an American musician and singer. She has been lead guitarist and co-vocalist of the alternative rock band The Breeders since 1992, and has formed her own side-projects with bands such as R. Ring and The Kelley Deal 6000.
