Ulmer, Iowa
Ulmer is an unincorporated community in Sac County, in the U.S. state of Iowa. Geography The community is located near the junction of U.S. Route 71 and County Road D-59. History Ulmer was platted on November 21, 1900 by Carrie and W.T. Martin. The community was established on the Illinois Central Railroad. A post office was established at Ulmer in 1901, alongside the Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad. The Farmers State Savings Bank of Ulmer was founded in 1911. Circa 1914, Ulmer was also the site of a dry goods and grocery store, a hardware and grocery store, a blacksmithing shop, a grain elevator, a lumber company, a stock dealer, an implement store, and a pool hall. The only church was the Presbyterian church. In 1914, historian William H. Hart stated that Ulmer had made "a fine growth in its few years of existence." Sac County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,814. The county seat is Sac City. Both were named for the Sauk people, a local American Indian tribe. Area code 712 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the most western part of Iowa, including the cities of Spencer, Le Mars, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Red Oak, Sheldon, Storm Lake, Carroll, Sac City, and Shenandoah. Area code 712 was one of the original three area codes for the state of Iowa established in 1947, and is the only one that still has its original boundaries. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Illinois Central Railroad
The Illinois Central Railroad , sometimes called the Main Line of Mid-America, was a railroad in the Central United States, with its primary routes connecting Chicago, Illinois, with New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. A line also connected Chicago with Sioux City, Iowa (1870). There was a significant branch to Omaha, Nebraska (1899), west of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and another branch reaching Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1877), starting from Cherokee, Iowa. The Sioux Falls branch has been abandoned in its entirety. The Canadian National Railway acquired control of the IC in 1998, and merged its operations in 1999. The Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad (Chicago Central & Pacific Railroad) is part of the Illinois Central Railroad (IC), which is owned by the Canadian National Railway (CN) through the Grand Trunk Corporation. Operationally, the Chicago Central & Pacific is designated as the Iowa Zone of CN's Southern Region.
