Uldis Osis
Uldis Osis (born April 10, 1948, in Riga) is a Latvian economist, Doctor in Economics, Professor, the Corresponding Member of the Latvian Academy of Science. He is co-founder and member of the Latvian Economist's Association 2010, which emerged from the group of intellectuals and policymakers in 1992 in Washington DC. As an economist and politician, Osis favors a free market economy and less government intervention in business. From 1993 to 1994 he was in the cabinet of the Prime Minister Valdis Birkavs holding the position of Minister of Finance. In this capacity, he appeared as one of the leading reformers of the Latvia's economy in the transition from command to the free market economy. The Latvian Academy of Sciences ( lv, Latvijas Zinātņu akadēmija) is the official Academy of Sciences, science academy of Latvia and is an association of the country's foremost scientists. The academy was founded as the ''Latvian SSR Academy of Sciences'' ( lv, Latvijas PSR Zinātņu akadēmija). It is located in Riga. The current President of the academy is Ivars Kalviņš. Valdis Birkavs
Valdis Birkavs (born July 28, 1942) is a Latvian politician. He was born in Riga. Birkavs attended the University of Latvia, where he studied philosophy, sociology, law, psychology and mathematical logic. He was first elected to the Latvian parliament in 1990 and helped to found the Latvian Way party. After Latvian Way won the 1993 parliamentary election, Birkavs became the prime minister, leading a coalition government of Latvian Way and the Latvian Farmers' Union. He resigned after the Farmer's Union left the government in the summer of 1994. He then became the deputy prime minister and foreign minister in the next government. He remained the foreign minister for five years under four different prime ministers, eventually resigning in 1999. The People's Party ( lv, Tautas partija, TP) was a conservative political party in Latvia. The People's Party was the leader of three governments and a member of another four. History Tautas partija was founded in 1998 by Andris Šķēle, a businessman and former prime minister, who was the chairman of the party until 2002. Because of Šķēle's powerful personality, many voters identified the party with its leader during this period. In 2002, Šķēle exited politics and Atis Slakteris became the chairman of Tautas partija. Latvia's First Party/Latvian Way ( lv, Latvijas Pirmā partija/Latvijas Ceļš, LPP/LC) was a political party in Latvia created from the merger of the Christian-democratic Latvia's First Party (LPP), the liberal Latvian Way (LC) and the regionalist We for our District and Vidzeme Union in 2007.
