Ukrainian Uruguayans
Ukrainian Uruguayans ( uk, Українці Уругваю, ''Ukrajintsi Urugvaju'', es, Ucraniano-uruguayos, links=no) are an ethnic minority in Uruguay. Ukrainians arrived in Uruguay around the 1920s, coming from Western Ukraine, Bukovina and the Zakarpattia Oblast, as well as some immigrants from Argentina.Wasylyk, Mykola (1994). Rioplatense Spanish
Rioplatense Spanish (), also known as Rioplatense Castilian, is a variety of Spanish spoken mainly in and around the Río de la Plata Basin of Argentina and Uruguay. It is also referred to as River Plate Spanish or Argentine Spanish. It is the most prominent dialect to employ ''voseo'' in both speech and writing. Many features of Rioplatense are also shared with the varieties spoken in south and eastern Bolivia, and Paraguay. This dialect is often spoken with an intonation resembling that of the Neapolitan language of Southern Italy, but there are exceptions. As Rioplatense is considered a dialect of Spanish and not a distinct language, there are no credible figures for a total number of speakers. Miguel Terekhov
Miguel Terekhov (August 22, 1928 – January 3, 2012) was a Uruguayan-born American ballet dancer and ballet instructor. Terekhov and his wife, Yvonne Chouteau, one of the Five Moons, a group of Native American ballet dancers, founded the School of Dance at the University of Oklahoma in 1961. Early life Terekhov was born on August 22, 1928, in Montevideo, Uruguay. His mother, Antonia Rodriguez, was a Charrúa Indian, a people indigenous to Uruguay and southern Brazil. His father, Mikhail Terekhov, a former dancer, immigrated to Uruguay from Ukraine. At the age of 8 or 10 Miguel Terekhov watched a company perform in his hometown and knew he wanted to perform. María Macarena Gelman García (born 1 November 1976, in Montevideo) is an Uruguayan activist and politician. Biography Born in captivity to an Argentine mother, María Claudia García Irureta Goyena, her father was Marcelo Ariel Gelman Schuberoff, son of Argentine poet Juan Gelman. Her parents were kidnapped during the Argentine junta, Argentine military junta, and María Claudia was moved to Uruguay under Operation Cóndor; while there, she was held at the clandestine detention center ''Centro de detención del Servicio de Información de Defensa'', ultimately being moved to the Hospital Militar upon the birth of her baby. Macarena was placed for adoption to a Uruguayan family. Her biological parents were murdered. Estela Golovchenko (born 16 March 1963) is a Uruguayan playwright, actress, and theater director. Biography Estela Golovchenko was born in San Javier, in the Río Negro Department of Uruguay. In 1986, she moved to Fray Bentos (and has since lived there) and joined the theatrical group ''Teatro sin Fogón''. Fernando "Nando" Seler Parrado Dolgay (born 9 December 1949) is one of the sixteen Uruguayan survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on 13 October 1972. After spending two months trapped in the mountains with the other crash survivors, he, along with Roberto Canessa, climbed through the Andes mountains over a 10-day period to find help. His efforts, supported in various ways by the entire group, have been recognized through books and other media. He was portrayed by Ethan Hawke in the 1993 feature film ''Alive''.
