A raion (also spelt rayon) is a type of administrative unit of several post-Soviet states. The term is used for both a type of subnational entity and a division of a city. The word is from the French (meaning 'honeycomb, department'), and is commonly translated as "district" in English. The Archeparchy of Lviv is a metropolitan archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. History Eparchy of Halych (1156 – 1406) The eparchy was established as the Orthodox Eparchy of Halych suffragan to Metropolitan of Kiev at some time during the mid 12th century, with its see originally located in Halych. Sviatoslav Shevchuk ( uk, Святосла́в Шевчу́к; born 5 May 1970 in Stryi, Ukrainian SSR) has been the Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) since 25 March 2011, serving as the Eastern Catholic church's leader. Bishop Mykhaylo Koltun, C.Ss.R. ( uk, Михайло Колтун; born 29 March 1949 in Polonychi, Busk Raion, Lviv Oblast, Ukrainian SSR) is a Ukrainian Greek Catholic hierarch as an Eparchial Bishop of Sokal–Zhovkva since 21 July 2000. Ihor Vozniak (born 3 August 1951) is the Archbishop of Lviv since 2005, succeeding Lubomyr Husar. Life Vozniak was born on 3 August 1951 in Lypytsi, in Mykolaiv Raion, Lviv Oblast, in the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union (in present-day Ukraine). He entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in 1973 and was secretly ordained a priest in Vinnytsia on 23 November 1980. He served in the cathedral of Ternopil from 1989. Eparchy
Eparchy ( gr, ἐπαρχία, la, eparchía / ''overlordship'') is an ecclesiastical unit in Eastern Christianity, that is equivalent to a diocese in Western Christianity. Eparchy is governed by an ''eparch'', who is a bishop. Depending on the administrative structure of a specific Eastern Church, eparchy can belong to an ecclesiastical province (usually a metropolis), but it can also be exempt. Each eparchy is divided into parishes, in the same manner as a diocese in Western Churches.
