Uganda Women's National Rugby Sevens Team
The Uganda women's national rugby sevens team represents Uganda in international rugby sevens. They compete annually in the Africa Women's Sevens, and have made an appearance in the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens at the inaugural women's tournament. History Uganda has previously participated in the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens for the inaugural women's tournament. Former coach, Helen Buteme, was one of the players in the 2009 squad. Uganda competed at the 2019 Africa Women's Sevens which also served as an automatic Olympic qualification tournament for the winner. They finished in 5th place. The Lady Cranes attended the 2021 Safari Sevens. Rugby World Cup Sevens
Rugby World Cup Sevens (RWCS) is the quadrennial world championship of rugby sevens, a variant of rugby union. Organised by World Rugby, it currently consists of men's and women's tournaments, and is the highest level of competition in the sport outside of the Summer Olympics. The first tournament was held in 1993 in Scotland, and was won by England. The winners of the men's tournament are awarded the Melrose Cup, named after the Scottish town of Melrose where the first rugby sevens game was played. A women's tournament was introduced at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai, and was first won by Australia. After the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens, the tournament took an extended, five-year hiatus to allow the integration of rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics into the competitive calendar. 2015 Women's Africa Cup Sevens
The 2015 Women's Africa Cup Sevens was a women's rugby sevens tournament for the continental championship of Africa and a qualification tournament for rugby sevens at the 2016 Summer Olympics. The competition was held in Kempton Park, South Africa on 26–27 September 2015. It was the fifth all-continental African Women's Sevens Championship, hosting teams from both Northern and Southern Africa. South Africa, as the tournament winner, qualified directly for the Olympic Games but their National Olympic Committee decided not to send a team so the runner-up, Kenya, took their place. African Women's Sevens Championship
The Africa Women's Sevens is the continental championship for women's international rugby sevens in Africa. The tournament sanctioned and sponsored by Rugby Africa (previously CAR) which is the rugby union governing body for the continent. The first official regional 7s championship for international women's teams from Africa was held in Tunisia in 2004, although this only included teams from Northern Africa. The first World Cup Sevens qualifier for women's teams from Africa was held in Uganda in 2008. Since then, African championships have periodically served as pre-qualifying competitions for the Rugby 7s World Cup, or other sevens tournaments such as at the Summer Olympics.
