USS Seid (DE-256)
USS ''Seid'' (DE-256) was an of the United States Navy in service from 1943 to 1945. She was scrapped in 1947. Namesake Daniel Seid was born on 29 November 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. After receiving his A.B. degree from the University of California at Los Angeles, he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve (USNR) at Long Beach on 10 September 1940, as Seaman second class. On 15 September 1940, he was assigned to preliminary flight training at the Naval Reserve Aviation Base, Long Beach. On 19 November 1940, he was appointed Aviation Cadet, USNR, and reported for training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, on 25 November 1940. Following additional training at the Naval Air Station Miami and appointment as Naval Aviator, he was commissioned Ensign, USNR, on 25 July 1941. Boston Navy Yard
The Boston Navy Yard, originally called the Charlestown Navy Yard and later Boston Naval Shipyard, was one of the oldest shipbuilding facilities in the United States Navy. It was established in 1801 as part of the recent establishment of the new United States Department of the Navy, U.S. Department of the Navy in 1798. After 175 years of military service, it was decommissioned as a naval installation on 1 July 1974. Destroyer Escort
Destroyer escort (DE) was the United States Navy mid-20th-century classification for a warship designed with the endurance necessary to escort mid-ocean convoys of merchant marine ships. Development of the destroyer escort was promoted by the British need in World War II for anti-submarine ships that could operate in open oceans at speeds of up to 20 knots. These "British Destroyer Escort"s were designed by the US for mass-production under Lend Lease as a less expensive alternative to fleet destroyers. The Royal Navy and Commonwealth forces identified such warships as frigates, and that classification was widely accepted when the United States redesignated destroyer escorts as frigates (FF) in 1975. Shakedown cruise is a nautical term in which the performance of a ship is tested. Generally, shakedown cruises are performed before a ship enters service or after major changes such as a crew change, repair or overhaul. The shakedown cruise simulates working conditions for the vessel, for various reasons. For most new ships, the major reasons are to familiarise a crew with a new vessel and to ensure all of the ship's systems are functional. Roi-Namur ( ) is an island in the north part of the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Today it is a major part of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site, hosting several radar systems used for tracking and characterizing missile reentry vehicles (RV) and their penetration aids (penaids). Etymology The name of the new island is after the formerly separate islands Roi and Namur were joined by landfill. ''Roi'' is originally from Marshallese ''Ruot'', while ''Namur'' is originally from Marshallese ''Nim̧ur''. History Germany annexed the Marshalls in 1885 but did not put government officials on the islands until 1906, leaving island affairs to a group of powerful German trading companies. Kwajalein Atoll (; Marshallese: ) is part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI).
