USS Linden (1860)
USS ''Linden'' was a steamer acquired by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She was used by the Navy to patrol navigable waterways of the Confederacy to prevent the South from trading with other countries. Service history ''Linden'', a wooden sidewheel steamer, was built in 1860 at Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania; purchased by the Navy at Cincinnati, Ohio, 20 November 1862; and commissioned at Cairo, Illinois, 3 January 1863, acting Master Thomas E. Smith in command. ''Linden'' departed Cairo 9 January escorting charter steamer ''Home'' and five coal barges to Memphis, Tennessee. After convoy duty up and down the Mississippi River, ''Linden'' was ordered to cooperate with General Ulysses S. Grant in cutting a canal between the Red and Black Rivers through Tensas Bayou. Steam Engine
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. The steam engine uses the force produced by steam pressure to push a piston back and forth inside a cylinder. This pushing force can be transformed, by a connecting rod and crank, into rotational force for work. David Dixon Porter
David Dixon Porter (June 8, 1813 – February 13, 1891) was a United States Navy admiral and a member of one of the most distinguished families in the history of the U.S. Navy. Promoted as the second U.S. Navy officer ever to attain the rank of admiral, after his adoptive brother David G. Farragut, Porter helped improve the Navy as the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy after significant service in the American Civil War. Porter began naval service as a midshipman at the age of 10 years under his father, Commodore David Porter, on the frigate . For the remainder of his life, he was associated with the sea. Porter served in the Mexican War in the attack on the fort at the City of Vera Cruz. Quiver River (Mississippi)
Quiver River is a river in Mississippi, United States. The source of Quiver River is the Upper Quiver River and Lower Quiver River, located northwest of Sumner, Mississippi. Quiver River flows south, passing through Tallahatchie County, Leflore County, and Sunflower County, before flowing into the Sunflower River northwest of Moorhead, Mississippi. During the American Civil War, the Confederate vessel ''Emma Bett'' was captured on May 30, 1863 and set afire on the Quiver River near the Sunflower River. The Confererate steamer "Dewdrop" was also sunk in the Quiver River north of Moorhead, MS. Her owner, Sherman Parisot, set her ablaze when the Union troops were with 60 yards of capturing her. Yazoo City, Mississippi
Yazoo City is a U.S. city in Yazoo County, Mississippi. It was named after the Yazoo River, which, in turn was named by the French explorer Robert La Salle in 1682 as "Rivière des Yazous" in reference to the Yazoo tribe living near the river's mouth. It is the county seat of Yazoo County and the principal city of the Yazoo City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger Jackson–Yazoo City Combined Statistical Area. According to the 2010 census, the population was 11,403. The most important industry in 2021 is a group of federal prisons. The second USS ''Petrel'' was a tinclad wooden steamer in the United States Navy. ''Petrel'' was purchased as ''Duchess'' at Cincinnati, Ohio, 22 December 1862, renamed ''Petrel'', and commissioned. Assigned to the Mississippi Squadron, she participated in the Yazoo River expedition against Haynes Bluff, 30 April – 1 May 1863, then went after Confederate shipping on the Yazoo and Sunflower rivers. In July she cruised the Red, Black, Tensas and Ouachita rivers, capturing four rebel vessels and military stores. USS ''Forest Rose'' was a stern wheel steamer in the United States Navy. ''Forest Rose'' was built in 1862 in Pittsburgh; purchased 15 November 1862; and commissioned 3 December 1862. Assigned to patrol duty in the Mississippi Squadron, ''Forest Rose'' sailed in active cooperation with the Army of the Mississippi throughout her war-time career. She convoyed transports, carried messages, fired on Confederate shore positions and troop detachments, and captured or destroyed a number of small steamers. USS ''Baron DeKalb'' was a gunboat constructed for the Union Navy by James B. Eads during the American Civil War. USS ''Baron DeKalb'', named after General Baron DeKalb of Hüttendorf near Erlangen, in present-day Bavaria, was originally named ''Saint Louis'', and was one of seven City-class ironclads built at Carondelet, Missouri and Mound City, Illinois, for the Western Gunboat Flotilla. These ironclads were shallow draft with a center driven paddle wheel. They were partially armored and slow and very hard to steer in the currents of rivers. Bruinsburg, Mississippi
Bruinsburg is a ghost town in Claiborne County, Mississippi, United States. It was located on the south bank of Bayou Pierre, east of the Mississippi River. The town's port, Bruinsburg Landing, was located directly on the Mississippi River, just south of the mouth of the Bayou Pierre. Once an important commercial and military location, nothing remains today of the town or its port. History Bruinsburg is named for Peter Bryan Bruin, who emigrated from Ireland to Virginia in 1756, and later fought as a lieutenant during the American Revolution.
