USS Chesterfield County (LST-551)
USS ''Chesterfield County'' (LST-551), originally USS ''LST-551'', was an built for the United States Navy during World War II and in commission from 1944 to 1955 and again in the late 1960s. Named after Chesterfield County, South Carolina, and Chesterfield County, Virginia, she has been the only U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name. Construction and commissioning ''LST-551'' was laid down on 15 January 1944 at Evansville, Indiana, by the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company. She was launched on 11 March 1944, sponsored by Mrs. H. Edward Lannan, and commissioned on 14 April 1944. Ceremonial ship launching involves the performance of ceremonies associated with the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a nautical tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years, to accompany the physical process with ceremonies which have been observed as public celebration and a solemn blessing, usually but not always, in association with the launch itself.
