USS Ariel (AF-22)
USS ''Ariel'' (AF-22) was the United Fruit Company cargo and passenger liner ''Peten'', renamed ''Jamaica'' in 1937, that served as a United States Navy in World War II. As ''Segovia'' it was launched on 15 August 1931 the same day as , both ships christened by First Lady Lou Henry Hoover using water gathered from Central American rivers. ''Segovia'' burned at the fitting out pier and was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt under a different hull number and renamed ''Peten'' by Mrs. Hoover on the anniversary of the first, 15 August 1932. ''Peten'' was delivered to the company's United Mail Steamship Company subsidiary in February 1933. The ship served on the company's Atlantic routes between New York City, New York and Panama. Ariel (Shakespeare)
Ariel is a spirit who appears in William Shakespeare's play '' The Tempest''. Ariel is bound to serve the magician Prospero, who rescued him from the tree in which he was imprisoned by Sycorax, the witch who previously inhabited the island. Prospero greets disobedience with a reminder that he saved Ariel from Sycorax's spell, and with promises to grant Ariel his freedom. Ariel is Prospero's eyes and ears throughout the play, using his magical abilities to cause the tempest in Act One which gives the play its name, and to foil other characters' plots to bring down their master. Ariel means "Lion of God" in the Hebrew language. Ariel may also be a simple play on the word "aerial". Scholars have compared Ariel to spirits depicted in other Elizabethan plays, and have managed to find several similarities between them, but one thing which makes Ariel unique is the human edge and personality given to Ariel by Shakespeare. The War Shipping Administration (WSA) was a World War II emergency war agency of the US government, tasked to purchase and operate the civilian shipping tonnage the United States needed for fighting the war. Both shipbuilding under the Maritime Commission and ship allocation under the WSA to Army, Navy or civilian needs were closely coordinated though Vice Admiral Emory S. Land who continued as head of the Maritime Commission while also heading the WSA. Vigor Shipyards is the current entity operating the former Todd Shipyards after its acquisition in 2011. Bethlehem Steel Corporation Shipbuilding Division was created in 1905 when the Bethlehem Steel Corporation of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, acquired the San Francisco shipyard Union Iron Works.
